Legal representatives for the crown prince and princess of Saxony in Berlin on June 2 reached terms for a separation. The princess will relinquish titles and revert to her maiden name. The crown prince offers to pay her 7600 dollars yearly and retains the right to see their children.
A broken rail caused a Des Moines and Minneapolis passenger train to derail on a twenty foot embankment near Byron Illinois. One man died and thirteen were injured including Thomas D Healy J L Atwater and J Barbour. The Pullman sleeper was demolished and victims were treated at a nearby farmhouse before a relief train reached the scene.
Baltimore January 20 The explosion of a freight locomotive boiler on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad near Monrovia killed two firemen and left conductor and brakeman fatally injured. The dead are Fireman Lewis Hahn James Graham and Conductor Charles Cutsall.
Chicago January 20 Rev Frank Gunsaulus halted his sermon at Peoples church after stating a hip injury. He dismissed the congregation at the Studebaker theater to avert panic as smoke filled the venue due to a broken furnace. No fire danger reported.
Dawson dispatch reports a huge new gold discovery eighteen miles north of a Tanana river point in American territory. The field, with several creeks including Cold Stream fed by Pedro, shows pay dirt from December and has attracted about 100 prospectors. Wada’s crew notes rich depths and a dense timber belt as staking widens with time. Jack Casta rejects a $50 900 offer for his Cold Stream claim.
The remains of ex congressman Thomas H Tongue were laid to rest in Hillsboro Oregon after a state house wake attended by 1000 people including Washington congressmen, Oregon legislators, state officials and fraternal bodies. Admiral Higgins reports from San Juan that an accidental discharge of percussion primer in the Massachusetts eight inch turret caused a powder charge to explode, killing five crew and injuring four. The entire gun team perished or was severely burned, with Ensign Clarence Abele and officers aiding in unloading and dousing the turret. Surviving crew show mangled injuries as Captain Harry Lee and others organize rescue efforts. The dead are Felix Herbert Lossseil, Stephan Frank Malinowski, Andrew Hendricksen, Kenneth Joseph Platt, and Robert Rule. Injured include Alexander Newton Dossett, James Carfield Patterson, Albert Stephen Tacke, Walter William August Schert. Two Greenville Michigan fridge plant workers killed in a separate blast at Raney Refrigerator plant.
Recitations at Lake Forest college in Chicago have been temporarily suspended due to several scarlet fever cases among students. The college hospital is crowded with patients.
Chicago, Jan 20. George W. Streeter Henry Hoeldtke and William McManners were convicted of manslaughter. Indeterminate sentences were imposed after denying a new trial. A forty days stay was granted to permit an appeal to a higher court.
President John Mitchell plans to open the United Mine Workers convention in Tomlinson Hall Indianapolis. Over the next ten days delegates will set wage demands for the metallurgical district covering Illinois Indiana Pennsylvania and Ohio. A wage conference between miners and operators begins January 30. Miners seek a straight mine scale and reduced differential between pick and machine mining along with a uniform outside worker scale.
Edward J. Maginnis of Girardville testified before the strike commission in Philadelphia about a fetter sent to the governor protesting troops escorting non-union workers. He said business leaders called a mass meeting. miners’ president Fahey and union officials claimed the governor promised troops but not police duty. Community fears of possible bloodshed were voiced as soldiers escorted workers.
West Newton Pa January 2 a boiler explosion at Bella Mia mill wrecked saw mill killed two men and injured others. William Hunter and Robert Pore were among the injured. Hunter a former Pennsylvania legislator is named in the report. James Dyke cited in connection with the case.
