Wild Goose Chase Leaves Colonists Disgusted in South Dakota

A large group of colonists traveled to Lemon in the northwest corner of South Dakota, seeking land at 1.26 per acre. All but Tom Stull Rob Raney and Mrs J R Lillie and Sadie returned home the next day. They denounced a Mason City agent who lured them into a costly trip with promises of cheap land. Locators charged $25 to locate a man, or $2.50 if unsuccessful, while railroad land nearby demanded over 10 per acre. Redfield impressed one traveler as the best stop, but many will risk more, or less, chasing “God’s country.”
