Kittie Ritter brings action to restrain the mayor and police chief from carrying out an aldermen’s order abolishing the redlight district. The filing argues the council lacks authority to close the district and seeks a court ruling on the legality of the order.
Kit tie Ritter petitions for a temporary injunction to restrain Mayor John W. Elder, Marshal Thomas McMillin, and the Albuquerque City Council from enforcing a council resolution to vacate redlight district tenants by July 1. The plaintiff, a real estate owner and taxpayer, claims the city has no power to interfere with her business on North Third Street and that the threatened eviction would cause irreparable loss. The complaint, filed in Bernalillo County District Court, names the mayor, marshal, and council as defendants and notes a prior lease and residence at 205 to 221 North Third Street.
In Mexico City a women’s club of prominent members launches a suffrage movement. A petition to Interior Minister Emilio Vasquez Gomez seeks voting rights and public office for women, backing Francisco I. Madero and Dr. Francisco Vasquez Gomez. The move aims to have authorities register women voters and count their ballots. The petition argues guarantees in the constitution apply to women as well as men. Meanwhile, Governor of the Federal District eases liquor licenses, reducing the old system’s control, and Fr an cero Madero makes a country trip before the flower statue celebration. Zapata’s forces’ reduction in Cuernavaca lessens new trouble risk.
Emperor William with Admiral von Tirpitz and aides visits the Louisiana flagship of the U S Atlantic Fleet at Kiel. The informal luncheon excludes toasts and includes stories while German and American crews race boats with American sailors prevailing in a gig race.

Portsmouth June 24 The fighting ships of 185 vessels from many nations form the world’s largest salute for England’s sailor king George V amid bright sunshine. The Delaware Von der Tann Canton Radetzky lead a six mile long line near the Isle of Wight with foreign ships and American visitors watching. The Delaware crew and Captain Gove receive the king’s thanks aboard the royal yacht Victoria and Albert as gun salutes echo across the Solent. The king spends the night at Portsmouth watching the fleet leave the harbor.
Great crowds from outlying districts crowded the principal streets as holiday intensions faded after rain. Illuminations burned while sightseers looked for interest. the city appeared half dismantled with workmen removing stands drapings and police barriers.
A boiler explosion on the Mississippi River packet City of St Joseph near President's Island caused 50 to 60 passengers and crew to be injured. Most white crew and passengers escaped serious harm, but Chief Engineer F H Morgan and 19 of 24 black injured were fatally or severely burned. Captain Charles W Organ aided by a ferryboat crew saved the burning vessel.
Atlanta June 24 Judge Newman hears Charles W Morse seek a writ of habeas corpus to challenge his fifteen year federal sentence for banking law violations and detention at the Atlanta prison alleging misapplication of the prison’s hard labor rule and excessive term. Morse cites a similar misdemeanor case sent to a state facility and presses for release.
President Taft, back in Washington from New England, plans a busy week pushing the Canadian reciprocity bill in the Senate and pledging to veto any amendments. He will depart for Beverly Mass to join the summer White House then travel to Indiana for Fourth of July events in Indianapolis.
Speaker Champ Clark issued a statement on President Taft’s possible veto of general tariff legislation. He said the tariff should be revised from top to bottom and that the country endorsed the House plan to revise schedule by schedule. He warned that if the Senate or the President blocks the bills, the party would appeal to the country.
Judge Joseph T. Marke ordered the release of Walter Drew and J A G Radorff representatives of the National Erectors Association along with W J Pord and Frank P Fox all held on bond in the kidnapping case of J W McNamara after reviewing grand jury evidence and case records.
The United States circuit court of the eighth district dismissed the government’s bid to enjoin the Union Pacific from controlling the Southern Pacific. Judge Adams held the Harriman merger did not substantially restrain trade and found the merger improved service and efficiency with no evidence of a conspiracy to restrain interstate commerce. The decision noted no rate changes or discrimination post 1901 and stressed the rule of reason in evaluating the case.
Juarez Mexico June 24 Colonel Fidencio and 200 men departed at 6 p m for Los Angeles on a special Southern Pacific train. Two more trains with 18 coaches and 60 cattle cars arrived to move General Gordillo Escudero's 1200 men back to Chihuahua, with a departure likely Sunday morning unless orders change.
Two young women Helen Wilson of New York and Mildred De Haven of Brooklyn and a man Ulysses Yahud died in a fire that destroyed a boat house owned by William Barnes Jr. The blaze started when a smoker’s match ignited a mop with oil. Several others were injured including Thomas Kerr. Barnes described the panic and trapped women.
The two young women who perished in the Nantucket boathouse fire were from socially prominent New York families. Mildred de Haven is the daughter of Hugh de Haven, head of a major Brooklyn iron and steel firm, with a residence in elite Brooklyn heights. Helen Wilson is the daughter of H. R. Wilson, an officer and director of several companies and a member of key clubs including the Metropolitan, Union League, and Republican clubs.
Two thousand labor union men gathered in a mass meeting in New York pledged Congressman Victor Berger to present a House resolution protesting the alleged kidnapping of the McNamara brothers. Speaker J J McNamara’s associates defended him amid charges.
The Baptist World Alliance ends its sessions in Philadelphia after adopting a resolution for a world wide campaign against social evils and inviting other denominations to join. Delegates from Russia Sweden Germany England and Canada attend along with southern and northern Baptist conventions. The congress enters its second and final day.
New York reports Lillian Graham and Ethel Conrad, held since June 7 on charges of shooting WWER PD Stokes with intent to harm, were bailed out tonight. The release followed Grace Singleton arriving from France to aid her sister and to present letters for the defense.
Washington June 24 the senate committee on the territories votes six to three to favorably report the Flood statehood resolution admitting New Mexico and Arizona with a minor amendment on voting. Nelson Burnham and Lippitt oppose. Andrews and the New Mexico delegation favor passage.
