Queenstown June 25 The United States battleships Indiana and Massachusetts with the Naval Academy midshipmen aboard, sailed for Kiel on Tuesday under Commander K.K.B. Coente. The squadron host gave a reception aboard the Iowa and Admiral Cooke hosted a garden party. Ships open to the public drew thousands while a Dineeball team of American Bluejackets played an exhibition game.
The report notes the hottest June day in memory with a 108 degree high in Oklahoma City and a 111 degree record at a location named Vtackwelt amid a hot dry wind. The heat was widespread across the state.
On Nantucket June 25 a fire destroyed the Barnes family houseboat. Miss Mildred Dehaven and Miss Helen Wilson died from burns while Ulysses Pahud and Thurlow Weed Barnes II were badly burned attempting to rescue them. Thomas Kerr and Barnes II remain in critical condition.
Tampa dispatch reports General W. H. Bixby arriving from Havana stating the Maine destruction may never be fully understood. He notes internal explosion likely at the forward magazine, with external torpedo involvement possible but unprovable without torpedo fragments. Remains or manned crew cannot be recovered.
Twenty persons were injured, some seriously, when a three car Chicago and Milwaukee inter urban special carrying members of the German singing societies of Chicago crashed into the rear of a train between North Chicago and Waukegan after returning from the Saengerbund convention in Milwaukee.
New York June 25 The steamer Hamburg from Genova and Naples detained at quarantine for observation. Health officers report the death at sea six days ago of a five year old boy from an ailment symptomatic of cholera. Hamburg cabin passengers will be allowed to disembark tomorrow morning.
Globe Arizona reports a prospector named Kinsley Olds, 46, accused of assaulting and drowning Mula and Myrtle Goswick, 11 and 12, near Salt River. Olds, shot in the jaw, is held in county jail as a posse searches for the illfated events and contested alibis.
A Morning Journal report from Vienna cites Charles Crane describing Turkish advances near the Montenegro frontier. He says Albanian districts are devastated, prisoners killed, refugees fleeing, homes burned, churches blown up, and tens of thousands of women and children starving in Montenegrin camps.
A scorching south wind hit eastern and central Kansas and western Missouri. Hartville in Wright county saw rain decline while Kansas City reached 100 degrees and Salina and Medicine Lodge hit 114, setting twenty six year highs. One death and five prostrations reported, with Mrs. Susan Ratley, 84, of Kansas City among the victims. Cooler weather forecast for tomorrow.
In Mississippi near Memphis the City of Hat river packet explosion tragedy worsened. Seventeen dead, with two more expected to die. Eight of the eight missing were black, five drowned, three scorched. Nine more died from injuries. Engineer Floyd Morgan severely burned but able to state boiler regulation violation may have caused the blast. Federal investigation expected.
The Whare wharf at King Edward Park in Isle Gros Rois collapsed as hundreds crowded to catch a ferry to Montreal. About twelve to sixty people were injured as the structure failed, with many plunged into wreckage. No deaths reported. broken limbs among the worst injuries.
In Cleveland today police clashed with garment strike demonstrators. A hospital confrontation over Abe Monheim ended with police preventing forceful removal. A later crowd attacked Officer Canfield, stripping his mace and injuring him severely.
The bodies of Anon Kees and Albert J. Handtman were found in the Ohio river near Cincinnati. Kees, a young actress known on stage as Bonnie Hampton, and Handtman, a prominent clubman and athlete, disappeared after a Thursday night boat ride. It is believed the launch struck a coal barge and overturned.
Captain David N. Jarvis former head of Morgan Guegenhein interests in Washington and Alaska died by his own hand Friday. The funeral at St Mark's Episcopal church in Seattle was led by Bishop H T Mowe of Alaska with a close friend of the deceased officiating.
