Piave River swells after fresh rains as Austrian forces push to cross. Supply shortages and high water hinder the invaders on the western bank, leaving troops in precarious positions and prompting food aid to arrive for local defenses.
Morning Journal reports Italian front holds, Piave battles intensify as Austrians pressure Montello. Italians, British, French push back. American aviators join bombing of Piave pontoon bridges while food shortages haunt Hungary and home fronts. Prisoners describe German front line fears of American success near Chateau Thierry.
Prisoners report that American troops in the trenches show courage and restraint. Letters captured from German soldiers reflect favorable impressions of the Yankee fighters and acknowledge bravery on the front lines.
Three Mexican gunmen and an American, all masked and armed, stopped Lawrence Hroyles near El Paso. They forced him to drive toward the Rio Grande to cross into Mexico, beat him, and dumped him in a water tank. He crawled away after twenty six hours without food or water. Authorities suspect Vila ammunition smugglers aimed to seize the truck for arms bound for Villas camp.
Felix Summerfield, arrested by federal officers, is held in New York for internment as an enemy alien. Once a bodyguard for Francisco Madero, he later served as purchasing agent for Villa and lived in New York. He admitted German birth and had worked at a New York hotel while connected with Villa’s cause, visiting Douglas, Naco, and Nogales on the Arizona border.
Denver Colorado June 11 reports cloudy conditions in New Mexico with local thunder showers. Cooler in the south portion Saturday with warmer Sunday. Arizona sees fair weather in the west with local showers in the coal portion. Warner area experiences cooler Saturday and variable winds Sunday.
Maximum temperature four degrees. minimum sixty six with a range of eighteen. At 6 p m the temperature was seventy three. East winds and cloudy skies described the conditions.
New York June 21 Documentary evidence to bolster Jeremiah O Leary s claim that federal authorities planned to frame him was presented in the trial of his brother John J O Leary who allegedly aided in the escape The letter from Harry A Wise to John J O Leary stating Wise would withdraw from Jeremiah s defense and offer service to the government was admitted with a later explanation expected.
The National Association of Credit Men closed its convention with a resolution praising Liberty Bonds for debt payments. A separate vote urged railways to use trade acceptances for purchases and called for a Washington credit bureau and a national trademark for American-made merchandise. FP McComas of Los Angeles elected president. 1919 meeting likely in St. Louis.
Port Arthur defeated Dallas by one vote to win the next convention location for the Texas Bricklayers Majors and Plasters International Union. Harry Bates of Dallas was reelected president Horace Carson of Corsicana became vice president and Harry Walker of Fort Worth serves as secretary treasurer. The convention adjourned today.
Justice Department announced the sentencing of Joseph F. Rutherford and 14 other Bible Students officials to twenty years each for conspiring to violate the espionage law. The group allegedly distributed antiwar propaganda to the Italian Army via religious literature mailed from Greece.
Four residents of Berlin escaped Germany on Thursday in two Albatross airplanes and landed safely in Denmark due to conditions at home. The first pilot was Dr. Gi F Nicolai formerly a Berlin university physiology professor. The second plane landed near Radkoebing with two infantry deserters who had fought on the front and allegedly preferred death to returning home.
A Hedapext dispatch reports Hungary suffers severe food shortages with only about a third of needed supplies in many provinces. Former premier Tamás Kende warns Hungary could struggle to survive until harvest, while Vienna and Prague report rising bread ration pressure and tensions in industrial centers. A Vienna dispatch notes grain arriving in Austria offers limited relief.
Paris dispatch reports Austrian losses in the Italian front offensive exceed 120000 according to Corriere Italia via Home. British casualties for the week ended June 23 total 36620 as tallied in London.
Washington reports American troops now hold 38 miles of front across six positions along the western line. U boats off the U S coast do not halt Atlantic troop movement. Secretary Baker General March and Representative Caldwell discuss war plans and rapid fire gun output.
The top American fighter, First Lieutenant Frank L. Basiles of New Bedford Massachusetts, is missing after a fierce clash with four German planes on June 17. Lieutenant Baylies, along with Sergeants Debootet and Macari, fought to defend, but Baylies’ plane caught fire and fell inside German lines. Baylies, 22, had twelve aerial victories since February 19 1978 and recently earned the Croix de Guerre.
U S artillery at midnight pounded Cha teau Thierry area with 1200 shells in ten minutes. Shelling shifted to Brasses as prisoners were recently taken nearby. Aerials show heavy enemy concentrations and material but exact effects remain unclear.

An American troop transport formerly a German liner, returning from a French port, faced a shell fire attack from a submarine two days out. A running battle of over an hour produced more than 100 shots, with 35 from the sub’s longer gun. The ship avoided torpedoes and escaped.
George F. Wooter was convicted by a federal jury in Sacramento California for possessing dynamite on December 22. William Hood pleaded guilty to related charges and received a combined fifteen months in Alameda jail plus fines. Hood’s sentence followed an explosion at Governor Stephens home and a wider probe into Industrial Workers of the World activities.
General Crowder outlines Work 08 fighting order guiding boards on immediate military induction. He states that men not engaged in productive labor face conscription and calls for prompt action to align with national defense needs.
