June 18 report from Geneva cites a reliable source stating Field Marshal von Hindenburg suffers from an acute nervous disease and is confined in a private sanitarium. It notes he took no responsible part in the recent western front offensive, the work being mainly by General Ludendorff.
American forces on the Marne sector repelled several German patrols that tried to approach the American lines. One patrol was entirely wiped out. Two German prisoners escaped detention and were captured after traveling from 100 miles behind the front, reporting harsher conditions once near American territory.

Four suspects including L Lindquist and Leo Burt were arrested in New York on charges of stealing munitions drawings and blueprints from U S plants. The group allegedly possessed working drawings for Browning guns and other military equipment, spanning four years, with a woman unnamed by officials.
Members of the crew of an American steamer report engaging a German submarine off the Virginia Capes yesterday. Naval gunners scored a clean hit and the submarine was sunk or disabled. The steamship sustained no damage.
Trinidad police hold a woman in connection with the May 24 death of Joseph Morine a wealthy pawnbroker in Kansas City She used the alias Mattie Howard to hide from her husband Frank Vanders and was identified after a restaurant cashier cashed a check in that name Frank Cook alias Frank Thomas and Mrs Vanders were brought to Trinidad from Raton New Mexico and detained awaiting Kansas City officers a fugitive warrant has been issued for detention
Kansas City Me June 148 Joseph Mooring a wealthy diamond broker dies after an open ment in downtown Trinidad. A woman believed to be Mr Frank J Vanders is held as a suspect. Also linked are Frank Thoras and a man named Vanders. Mooring carried diamonds valued over 2000 dollars and a sum of money. Police say death was caused by blows to the skull.
Allied forces hold the Piave line from Asiago to the Montello plateau as Austrian attacks are repulsed. Italian, British, French and American troops counterattack and recapture ground, with 26 900 Austrian prisoners reported and 120 guns captured. fighting also stalls along the Ancre, Montdidier and Aisne sectors in France.
Colonel Elbert E Persons and Colonel Clarence P Franklin with Lieutenant Adolfo Caruso depart for the Italian front as part of the American army ambulance service. They will be received by the king and then assume commands in the combat zone.
Washington reports Maj. Gen. Morrison today took command of the Western Department based in San Francisco, succeeding Maj. Gen. Charles G. Treat who was assigned to duty in Italy. The post is to become permanent, with history noting its earlier ties to Gen. Leonard Wood. The piece also references a separate noted financial matter about monthly funds and immigrant refunds.
