President tires of waiting and directs start of work as director over to organize the Food Administration at once. Senate will take up the measure Monday.
President Wilson orders immediate organization of the food administration with Hoover directing volunteer efforts to conserve food. He urges enlisting every housewife as a volunteer member to save and buy wisely, while Senate speeds up the food control bill amid wartime needs.
Los Angeles reports severe wildfires in southern California mountains causing extensive property damage. Many ranches and estates, including homes of wealthy easterners, are destroyed as hundreds flee. No deaths reported though injuries occur. Ojai and surrounding valley face isolation as fire advances.
Washington reports a proposed resolution by Senator Owen to have the government seize and run pews print paper mills during the war. It calls for a federal agency to direct paper manufacture and distribution under commerce, with cooperation from Canada to assure fair supply. The federal trade commission suggested government operation not mandatory takeovers, proposing producers run plants for a fair profit.
Italian forces attack Eastern Trentino and seize two field guns and multiple smaller calibers. The clash yields losses on the Austrian side as Italians press the offensive at high altitude.
Hundreds flee as fast moving forest fires push toward Ojai California forcing evacuations. Communication with the town is cut off at a late hour amid concerns the village may be burning.
From Petrograd dated June 16, reports say artillery fires on the western front and skirmishes along the Romanian front. Four British bombers hit a railway station near Vezen. An enemy squadron of seven planes bombarded Pwinsk. our artillery downed one aircraft near the Stokhod.
British forces seized three quarters of a mile of trenches on Infantry hill east of Monchy Le Preux in a two minute attack at 7 27 am after a daylight crossing of No Man s Land with no preliminary artillery. Only two British casualties occurred as German counter attempts failed. several prisoners and two machine guns were captured. The action and subsequent quiet on the Messines front are noted along with reports that German long range guns may have been salvaged from ships.
Soldiers and workers delegates adopt a proclamation declaring their opposition to quitting the peace process. The move signals a strong stance within the Austrian delegation as external Russian pressure disrupts ongoing negotiations.
A Soviet council of workmen and soldiers declared strong opposition to any separate peace with Austria. The proclamation, prompted by Austrian peace overtures, urges rallying behind revolutions and bolstering military power for freedom. It cites Prince Leopold of Bavaria’s telegram offering peace terms and stresses unity with allies against German imperialism.
Petrograd reports fresh German peace overtures with Russia and lists the expulsion of Robert Grimm, a Swiss citizen and socialist internationalist. The provisional government sought explanations after Grimm allegedly received a dispatch from Hoffmann, a Swiss official, proposing general peace talks.
Denver June 16 reports a forecast for New Mexico predicting Sunday and likely Monday fair skies with little change in temperature.
The twenty four hours ending 6 p m yesterday saw a high of 91 degrees and a low of 45 with a 46 degree range. At 6 p m the temperature was 36. An easterly wind brought partly cloudy skies.
German airships raided the east and southeast coast of England in the early hours. An official report says bombs were dropped on Kent causing damage and a fire in a coastal town. Later another Zeppelin was brought down in the Thames.
Dispatch denounces the affair as a clumsy German maneuver. Grimm claims he refused to join such negotiations at Berne and Stockholm and would not be an instrument of imperialist plans. The two Russian ministers reported to the cabinet that Grimm's explanation was unsatisfactory. An expulsion order was issued.
In Mexico City on June 16 Rafael Nieto acting secretary of finance explained the halt of a $20,000,000 gold bullion transaction to coin in the United States via an American bank. He dismissed rumors of German source gold and said the deal was terminated and inspectors recalled.
Federal authorities arrested thirty anarchists and seized anti conscription literature in New York. Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman were charged with conspiring to prevent enforcement of the draft and held on bail. A clash followed as women protesters clashed with police near City Hall, injuring several, with three women arrested. Police later released 150 young men seized at anti conscription meetings on promise to comply.
In Petrograd June 18, M Tereshchenko and Elihu Root outline a joint struggle against autocracy. The Russian government welcomes America’s mission and vows democracy will prevail with liberty and equal rights for all. Root stresses democratic competence and unity against German tyranny.
