London report on General Foch’s article in The Field stresses that defense alone cannot win wars. He argues final victory comes from a decisive offensive using mass reserves, surprise, and speed to destroy enemy organized power.
H W Green son of the late Hetty Green paid $1,000 for Mrs Woodrow Wilsons favorite thimble. The aviation committee of the National Special Aid society announced the sale to raise funds for aviator equipment not in government issue. The president's wife sent the thimble on the first aerial mail trip from Washington to be sold by the committee.
A Central News dispatch from London reports a Dresden meeting where the Berlin war food department secretary warned there would not be enough potatoes to last until the next harvest and that the outlook for meat and fat was worse than at the start of the year.

Worthington June 8 The Department of Commerce reports a rapid rise in U S merchant shipping since the war began. In five months 29 vessels total 687055 gross tons were built and officially numbered. The fleet now totals about 10600006 gross tons excluding Army controlled ships. In January 76742 vessels of 34322422 tons flew Stars and Stripes. May output shows 185 ships of 194461 tons, with May tonnage triple January figures.
Morning Journal Special says Allied forces report a nighttime raid south of Beaumont-Hamel netting thirty prisoners. French troops also capture several in a raid north of Bailleul. Raids by the enemy were repulsed near Arras and Givenchy-Les-La-Bas ees with heavy artillery action noted south of the front. Haig’s official statement adds there is nothing of interest to report on the British front.

British naval blockade of Zeebrugge forces German operations at the Belgian submarine base to falter as photos reveal harbor entrance silting and a sunken vessel inside the breakwater misidentified as an enemy destroyer. The dredger wreck severely hampers the German effort to clear the channel.

In the Marne action Capt George F Wellage of Tragie Pass Texas and Capt James O Green of Wisconsin led a daring assault on German machine gun nests.
