Los Angeles June 9 detective William J. Burns arrived to testify for the prosecution in the Clarence Darrow jury bribery trial. Burns plans to discuss alleged efforts to corrupt jurors and witnesses for the McNamara defense, including claims involving Samuel Gompers. The session follows Bert H. Franklin on the stand with P. J. Cooney expected to follow.
Three German warships Moltke Stettin and Bremen led by Rear Admiral Von Rebeur Paschwits arrived in New York with thirteen ships total. Thousands viewed the fleet along the Hudson as twenty one gun salutes rang out at Fort Jay. Seth Low and Mayor Gaynor welcomed the visitors granting free transit and car access to officers for their four day stay.
Fifteen white men and boys tried to oust the negro population of Clovis New Mexico in a dawn raid. Cherbourg June 9 reports confirm it is impossible to recover the bodies of the crew of the submarine Vendemarre which sank off the Cherbourg peninsula. Marine Minister Descas and officers paid homage aboard the Gloire. A Saint Louis officer said Vendemarre’s periscope passed near the battleship and the ram struck, likely killing all aboard instantly.
Trinidad June 9 Mohr shot by Miss Dorothe Doyle claiming marriage relation shows fragile condition but may recover if improving. Doyle declines to speak much and says she is ready for trial if Mrs Patterson is freed in Denver and she can face a Trinidad jury.
In San Diego on June 9 the Industrial Workers of the World and sympathizers held a meeting in a vacant lot outside the restricted district. Speakers attacked the government and used insulting references to the fascists. Detectives were present but the crowd was not broken up. the move on ordinance did not apply to indoor or non street gatherings. Representatives of Assistant Attorney General Benjamin attended.
Passengers aboard the Dora arriving from the west report ash showers and believe several small villages along Shelliker strait shore may have been destroyed. The Unalaska Revenue Cutter Service has been asked to dispatch assistance.
Seismic activity in southwestern Alaska continues with three shocks in Seattle today. Observers report Katmai and nearby peaks erupting, ash clouds darkening the Dora as it neared Cordova and Seward, passengers suffering gas exposure and dimmed sunlight from volcanic ash.
Cordova Alaska June 9 Residents of Kodiak island reported by wireless message from the Manning that they are safe after the Katmai eruption. The vessel Annie reported tidal waves up to fifty feet off Montagu island and the loss of two barges while towing.
Reported assassination attempt follows a flight from Chihuahua as Orozco continues his struggle against Madero. The episode is viewed as another sign of weakening fortunes in Orozco's campaign.
The capital hears that General Huerta has offered resignation as chief of the northern army following the Villa arrest. Villa allegedly struck Huerta and was ordered shot by a federal commander, with Emilo and Raoul Madero said to have saved Huerta’s life. Huerta reportedly refused Villa’s demand to take a town, citing past pillaging. The cabinet crisis eased by Igancio Rivero's resignation as district governor and Frederico Gongiles Garcia taking the post.
