Santa Fe Seeks to Discourage Albuquerque Brick Plant

A W R Brown district freight and passenger agent for the Santa Fe writes promoters of a proposed pressed brick plant at Algodones that Santa Fe intends to discourage the project by offering prohibitive freight rates. He cites 6 cents per 100 pounds to Albuquerque and 50 cents per 100 pounds to Los Angeles, with similar high rates to other southern and western points. The plant would cost 30,000 dollars and promoters are Albuquerque businessmen. Brick shale banks near Algodones have been leased, with material for up to 20,000,000 bricks found on government land. The Tongue Brick Company would locate near the Tongue ruins, leveraging fine shale like Coffeyville and an abundant supply, but freight prohibitions threaten the project.
