New York trustees of Equitable Assurance meet to fill six board vacancies and select the 1905 class of directors. The session comes after reports of other leadership changes and follows June and July recommendations.
Washington reports the campaign charge against United States Circuit Judge Baker of Indiana was referred to the Department of Justice by the civil service commission. The commission stated that statute of limitation appears to be the only defense to the charge.
Reports from St Petersburg dated Oct 11 indicate Emperor Nicholas II will place the issue of lifting university admission restrictions for Jews and related legislative matters before the national assembly. Concurrent items note a postponed World’s Championship game in Philadelphia due to wet grounds, and several regional notices.
The fair executive committee meeting is set for 8 oclock tomorrow night at Surety Investment Company's office. The investigating committee has completed its labors and signed findings, with A Macpherson announcing the full committee meeting to report. A four member subcommittee will plan tomorrow nights report after visiting American Lumber Company with Manager Jones.
The thirty first annual convention of the American Bankers association opened in Washington at the National theater with about four thousand members. President E F Swinney presided, prayers by Bishop Henry Y Satterjee, and welcome addresses by local officials. Delegates later elected nominations committees and prepared for afternoon receptions with President Roosevelt.
Chicago hosts a historic advertising exposition under the Chicago Advertising Association at the Coliseum. The event features a broad array of methods, appliances, and schemes, with a concurrent advertiser convention planned to unite merchants manufacturers and media professionals across the industry. Secretary Wilson has bachelor quarters in a large hotel, amid coverage of the expo and related events.
The twenty sixth annual state convention of the W C T U met at Milford Methodist Church with strong attendance. President Mrs Calk led the opening as sessions focused on devotional exercises. An afternoon mothers’ business meeting and evening program with music scripture readings and addresses were planned. The convention closes Friday evening.
The case centers on Edward G. Cunliffe of Adams Express and a $100,000 package he signed for that never reached the money forwarding office. About $1,000 missing from the Wood Street office adds to the loss. The express company paid the Cincinnati bank the amount for the lost shipment.
In Columbus Ohio on October 11 the Ohio State conclave of the Knights Templar began with a parade of more than 500 uniformed knights led by Colonel C S Ammel. The grand lodge officers and invited guests reviewed the parade and a fancy drill entertained attendees. The business session follows tomorrow with an automobile trip to area points of interest.
New York cable reports a wealthy New Yorker offered Dr Behring $50,000 if he reveals his treatment for consumption. Behring declined, saying he will choose collaborators and will not disclose his discovery to all. He emphasized controlled communication to advance the work.
Foreign dispatches report Premier Katsura hosting a dinner for Harriman while Alice Roosevelt attended a garden party. The German ships Amstruse and Hane Wagner seized off Fusan and Nishima bound for Vindivostock with contraband. The Norwegian steamer Arnfried and three German vessels were captured en route to Vindivostock. Royal marriage links unite Victoria Adelhald to Charles Edward amid German royal attendance. King Alfonso plans a state visit to Germany with Berlin events and socialist state convention proceedings also noted.
Sheriff Perfecto Armijo and deputies forcibly took possession of the offices of J Frank A Hubbell and Belavio Vigil in the county courthouse. The board of county commissioners ordered expulsion and transfer of rooms to Justo R Armijo and Andrew B Stroup, with officials denouncing the action as mob rule. The scene followed removals by Governor Otero and sparked accusations of unlawful force and political retaliation.
In Toledo on October 11 George J. Gould defeated Joseph Ramsey Jr to control the Wabash railroad by bondholder elected directors. Gould secured 228,110 votes to 91,840 for Ramsey, with the cumulative voting right denied by tellers and Gould nominating Hubbard Jeffery Terry Pierce Galloway and Welles. Ramsay offered no prevote nominations as Gould swapped names, while Ramsay withdrew earlier nominees. Washington reported Berea Rosen ship returns from Coalhike Point with his wife and daughter Elizabeth.
