In Washington debate heats as a representative threatens to assault another on the floor unless halted. Lawmakers scramble to avert conflict while security screens chat shows and floor leaders seek control. No injuries reported as guard presence increases.
Special to The Evening Citizen reports in Washington that Representative Gaines of Tennessee attempted to assault Representative Mahon of Pennsylvania on the house floor during a docking bill speech. Gaines accused Mahon of being absent 35 percent of the time, was restrained by colleagues, and order was restored as Mahon denied the charge as untrue. Other items note Carter’s condemnation of Hitchcock’s water-land patent order and a Supreme Court argument in Cunningham v Springer, with a decision pending.
Secretary Patt orders Brigadier General to try Corporal Knowles of Company A, 26th Infantry, by court martial for allegedly murdering Captain Macklin. McCaskey cites territorial law gaps preventing an attempt murder charge, forcing military jurisdiction at El Reno. Special to The Evening Citizen reports that an order to the local immigration bureau places New Mexico under federal jurisdiction. T. F. Schumeker, chief inspector, will take on expanded duties beginning February 1. He previously supervised related work in Texas from El Paso.
Two lawsuits began today to restrain the proposed merger of United States Leather company and Central Leather company. The merger would have moved control of $119,000,000 of $127,000,000 capital stock of United States Leather to Central Leather. Plaintiffs are holders of untold stock who did not assent to the plan and seek to prevent Jersey City accord set for next Wednesday.

Col Patko Amd reff, head of the Lodz gendarmerie, was shot dead on Poloudniowa Street. An infantry patrol fired on the attackers, wounding several bystanders as the assailants escaped. Troops sealed the area and police searched adjacent houses.
An appeal decision in Montreal declares a city charter clause bars magistrates from imprisoning people for drunkenness. As a result many prisoners previously serving terms were released and the ruling affects numerous offenders.
San Francisco on January 16 reports a looming coal shortage with only seven days of fuel in bunkers and at retail. No coal ships are arriving, raising the risk of a genuine famine. Southern Pacific may be asked to release about 100000 tons from its reserve.
A four day storm drenched Southern California bringing the heaviest precipitation in eighteen years. Severe impacts ranged north and east of Los Angeles with landslides near Santa Barbara blocking several trains. Four or five lives were lost, including two drowned when a county bridge collapsed near Lomper, plunging twenty people into the river.

Pittsburg reports describe a furnace explosion at Jones and Laughlin Company Limited causing seven charred corpses to be taken to the morgue and twelve foreigners badly burned in hospitals. Superintendent Messler cites a loosened steel band at the furnace bottom as the trigger with about 100 tons of steel inside. The disaster inflates potential losses beyond $50,000 as the furnace bottom is ruined. Meanwhile in New York a crowding incident at the 161st Street station results in the death of Wm. F. Newman and injuries to Carl Wehns. In London, von Lindequat and officials discuss preventing German South West Africa natives from crossing into Britain. Meantime in Goldfield, Nev, miner shortages are reported as 50 workers arrive from Salt Lake City with up to 2,000 more expected for annual claims work.
Joe Richards hosts his brother Edward Richards at Fort Bayard New Mexico a government sanitarium town with about 1000 residents and 600 patients. The settlement includes 100 surgeons and attendants plus officers and families. A new recreation building rises and cement walks are planned through every fort street.

Hartmore and stockholders approve issuing 18 million five per cent bonds secured by mortgage and collateral trust, due February 21 1997. Bonds will refinance maturing notes and support company growth with early range of 2.099 million further bonds. Stockholders may subscribe at ninety per cent plus interest.
