Carl Schurz a prominent publicist and former cabinet minister died at his New York home at 4:35 this morning after a struggle with stomach trouble and other illnesses. He was born in Cologne in March 1829 and was 76 years old.

Chattanooga Tennessee May 14 The morning session of the Southern Baptist Convention focused on foreign missions led by Rev R J Willingham of Richmond Virginia who serves as secretary of the board.

At Palmyra Miss Blanche Weslosky, 15, fell into Kinchafoonee Creek about twenty feet deep. Burdened by clothing she surfaced midstream and swam to the bank. Baton Rouge May 14 The second and last session of the Louisiana General Assembly convened today and will run sixty days. Key items include state and parish taxation issues, a compulsory primary election law, and a constitutional amendment on a bond issue for New Orleans municipal improvements.
Graduates of the Boys' High School in Atlanta will receive diplomas at the Grand Opera House on May 31. The class is the largest in the school's history with many young men finishing their studies.

Postmaster G W Fouts of Riverton Iowa reports he was robbed and nearly killed. He credits a 20 year chronic liver issue and severe jaundice to his illness before taking Electric Bitters, which he says cured him and kept him well for eleven years. The medicine is sold at drug stores for 60 cents.
Molten iron breached the No 4 furnace at Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. in Birmingham this morning. Charles Johnson was killed instantly, Archie Drake Weyman Stein and James Brown suffered fatal burns. The furnace damage runs into thousands of dollars.
Savannah May 14 John F Sapp of Waycross section foreman for the Atlantic Coast Line was killed last night at the Fortieth tree crossing while walking on the track. The article notes the accident occurred as he was walking along the rails near the crossing. An anniversary note follows about Mr and Mrs W J Pinson celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary with a large gathering and a barbecue dinner.
