Frederick VIII was proclaimed King of Denmark at noon in Copenhagen. Premier Christensen announced King Christian IX’s death to about 50,000, pledging to rule by his father’s example as the crowd cheered and the anthem played.
An altercation between Sheriff Passmore and Chief of Police C Dampier on Central avenue in Valdosta Georgia led to a pistol drawn and a scuffle. The pistol fired into the pavement without injury. Tensions between the two officials have long existed, but no further trouble is expected.
Washington January 1980 House committee reported the Sims resolution to direct the Census Bureau to transmit to the House the ginners estimate of cotton left to be ginned. Director North said he would provide any information in the bureau’s possession.

Police unearthed a secret subterranean chamber at 132 East Cain Street connected to the outside by two trap doors containing two kegs of beer and whiskey. Charlie Brown was arrested as authorities confiscated the whiskey and pet.
Four people were killed when two Great Northern passenger trains collided head on last night near Columbia Falls Montana. Both locomotives overturned and no further details have been released.

In a New York hearing yesterday against Francesco Sabbia, operator of an employment bureau, laborers recounted harsh treatment. Applicants for Florida East Coast Railway work to Key West were promised higher pay, charged for board, and subjected to brutal conditions. Five complainants escaped an island camp and walked seventy miles to Miami. They were arrested at Palm Beach and sentenced to ninety days in the chain gang for vagrancy.
The House opened debate on the Hepburn railroad rate bill with a detailed address by Townsend of Michigan. Debate limits failed and a vote is not expected for ten days or two weeks.
One thousand medals and one thousand bars received by the Adjutant General to be distributed to Georgia National Guard members with six years of continuous service. Medals honor six years and bars four additional years. Authorized by the General Assembly last year. Many applications on file.
Charles Daniel chief of the Atlanta News filed a personal answer to editor John Temple Graves injunction petition. He says he bought 247 shares with money borrowed from Samuel Spencer to thwart Graves and held the stock in Mills B. Lane’s name. Lane would not name a buyer when asked about a reported sale.
The Cook County Democratic Club of Chicago arrived in Atlanta three hours late with 180 members. They were greeted at the old depot by C C Hannah Fulton County Democratic League president Mayor Woodward and local citizens. A luncheon at Kimball House preceded a downtown parade and a reception at Col James W English Jr residence on Peachtree Street before boarding a special train back to Chicago.
Judge Pendleton ordered a decree in favor of the state in the railroad tax case. The ruling, issued today, sends the case toward the United States Supreme Court as the state contends the roads must pay.
