Noted priest Father Matthew O'Keefe dead at 78 in Towson
Rev Matthew O Keefe pastor of the Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate died of pneumonia in Towson Maryland aged 78. A native of Waterford Ireland he was the oldest priest in the diocese and longtime Confederate chaplain associated with General Lee and Jefferson Davis. He aided yellow fever victims in 1856 and 1869 and earned the Legion of Honor for aiding a fever-stricken French frigate crew. He died penniless after dedicating his fortune to church work.
