Valencia Wreck on Vancouver Island Rocks. many feared dead
The steamer Valencia of the Pacific Coast Steamship Co with ninety four passengers and sixty crew was wrecked east of Cape Beale on Vancouver Island early Tuesday amid forty mile southeast gales. Boats and women and children were lost as the ship struck. Five sailors and the boatswain survived and reached Cape Beale. Rescue ships were sent, but it was uncertain they would reach in time. The vessel had sailed from San Francisco Saturday for Victoria and soundings showed thirty fathoms before the wreck.
