Five Italian miners were killed in a massive Sunnyside mine snow slide near Silverton Colorado. Telephone lines are down and all communication is destroyed, trains halted, and nearby camps cut off. A mill was crushed, and the storm is one of the worst in memory.
In Columbus word says Thomas Woolfolk, son of Capt. and Mrs. T. N. Woolfolk, has been admitted to the practice of law after examination by authorities. He studied in the Goethius and Chappell office and will begin active practice there.
More than 100 students left Talladega College after L. O. Parka of Jefferson County was hired as superintendent of the college farm. President B. M. Nice refused their demand for Parka’s discharge, after which Dr. S. H. Baird of the American Missionary Society upheld Nice. The departure reflects tensions between Southern white leadership and a Northern dominated faculty as the student body of nearly 1,000, including many female sympathizers, walked out. Reverend Nice, a Presbyterian minister, arrived at Talladega about two years ago from Lockport New York.
New York reports General Joseph Wheeler has a mild pneumonia attack. An official bulletin says he was stricken Thursday night, developed pneumonia Sunday, with temperature at 100. Daughters are with him and two more are en route from Alabama to his bedside.
Knoxville reports two days of excessive mountain rains flood streams and wash out bridges on the South & Western, Southern, and Norfolk & Western lines. Tracks run under water and wires down from Johnson City to Cranberry. Asheville logs a tird inch of rain. England's heir Prince Edward aged 11 is humorist, joking about Perkin Warbeck.
Explosion in the powder magazines of the Brazilian turret ship Aquidabah near Port Jacarepagua caused her rapid sinking. About 196 dead and 36 injured, with four rear admirals among the lost. The Barroso brought injured survivors and officials including the Minister of Marine and staff.
The Commercial Bank stockholders suit to recover the value of holdings against former officers and directors begins this afternoon at 2 o clock in Americus. Auditor Eugenie A Hawkins will preside, with both sides presenting evidence. report to Judge Spence.
Boston line steamer Trojan of the Boston and Philadelphia line collided with Savannah Line steamer Nacoochee in Vineyard Sound due to dense fog. Trojan’s captain and crew were reported aboard the Nacoochee which arrived with details of the incident.
A local weather observer reports 1.16 inches of rain in 24 hours and 2.16 inches in 48 hours over a wide area. Flint River rose nearly two feet in 24 hours and sits eight feet above normal, with forecasts predicting continued rises. Rainfall is widespread across the state and country, causing flood-like conditions and high waters in rivers and streams.
At Annapolis Maryland the hazing trial of Midshipman Mayo resumes before a naval court martial. The only other midshipman under arrest on hazing charges is Midshipman Ghapjnj of California.
A forthcoming Albany Negro bank is considered certain, funded by the Metropolitan Realty Co of New York with $25,000 paid-in capital. The plan includes $20,000 from the company and $5,000 pledged by Albany Black residents. P Sheridan Ball of the Realty Co leads discussions with Dr. L Jackson and is coordinating stockholder meetings. Charlie McGarthy is named as cashier if he relinquishes his whiskey business. The Realty Co also aims to organize a Negro bank in Atlanta.
The Albany street crew, under city council supervision, began finishing the blocked and unpaved post office corner after delays. A large pool of stagnant water formed in a hole between Jackson and Pine streets, forcing pedestrians to wade as they passed the post office. The Herald had urged action and reports say workers resumed paving this morning.
An imperial Chinese commission assigned to study American social and industrial life visited Washington for ten days. Led by Chief Cle Dendy, the group, about ninety-two strong, lodged at the Arlington hotel and planned official calls as part of a formal goodwill mission.
Weather reports indicate a cold wave advancing from the Mississippi Valley into the eastern section. Temperatures are expected to fall tonight across the South Atlantic states.
