Firefighters and volunteers battled late night landslide collapse in Traverstraw New York where at least fifteen people perished in homes near a clay pit. A second slide endangered rescuers as crews labored to uncover and identify victims amid heat and ruined houses.
The census bureau bulletin reports 9 721 773 bales of cotton ginned by January 1. No comparison data for the same date last year is available. Washington officials released the figures today.
Atlanta resident known as Mother Matches has passed the pneumonia crisis and is recovering. Miss Rowena Peyton reports the patient, once famed for street peddling matches gum and soap, is alert about a gossip claim of dancing with King Edward VII. Electric pumps ordered months ago for the city plant on North Street are finally in place completing the new facility. The 1000 gallon per minute unit runs on a 70 HP motor and the smaller 25 HP unit powers the other pump, both directly coupled. The air lift machine is now in operation and the system will run entirely on Big Shoals power with no coal used, while steam equipment remains on hand for quick restart if needed.
Fire in the Knopsley building in Dallas injures three men. One suffocated, another fatally hurt, and a third seriously hurt. Loss is covered by insurance. The blaze caused about $50,000 in damage.
