San Francisco February 1 Fire broke out in the hold of the transport Meade early today killing Third Officer George Wallace and two firemen. Twenty men were overcome by fumes. four are missing and believed in the hold. The blaze was controlled by 3 a.m. Meade planned to sail for Manila with 1000 infantry and artillery units and cargoes of commissaries and quartermaster supplies.
Washington February 1 The House passed the Sims resolution ordering the Census Bureau to publish figures on unginned cotton from data collected through January 16.
The Dougherty county act consolidating offices remains in force unless repealed or ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Mr. Hall argues the office exists as clerk and ex officio treasurer, so he must run for both. quo warranto would test constitutionality if another is elected. The Supreme Court fate and local Democratic committee stance loom over the coming election.
Washington February 1 Representative Hitt of Illinois is seriously ill at his residence. Several physicians have been called and friends are alarmed over his condition.
Marquis Ito, Korea’s resident general, outlined Japan’s Korea policy at his residence. He said Japan will defend Korea and handle reforms and diplomacy with the emperor and ministers. He emphasized agricultural, mining, and forestry development and education for Korean youths as key to stronger relations.
Cla A. Swanson, long time member of the Fifty-third Congress and repeatedly re-elected, was inaugurated as Governor of Virginia. J. Taylor Ellison, former Richmond mayor and longtime state Democratic committee chair, became lieutenant governor as ceremonies followed in the House of Delegates hall before a joint session of the legislature.
Tokyo reports Admiral Togo, a gallant Japanese naval officer, will visit America in April with two armored cruisers. The announcement comes from good authority and places the visit in the near term.
Washington February 1 The Comptroller of the Currency issued a call for the condition of national banks at the close of business January 29 and reports are due. The notice requests balance sheets and statements covering all banks under federal supervision.
The Savannah News estimates the Greene and Gaynor conspiracy and embezzlement trial costs the United States about two dollars per minute of court time, potentially lasting ninety days. Excluding official salaries, the tally already runs to thousands of dollars with daily jurors bailiffs and incidentals totaling over a hundred dollars, and the full trial could reach fifty thousand dollars.
The Moultrie Observer reports residents aim to end dependence on Black servants by forming a local laundry for family work and inviting German and Swedish workers to serve as cooks nurses and maids. A fire at 2 a m in the Concordia four story building in Panama destroyed the surrounding block. Water shortages hindered fighting the blaze causing heavy losses estimated around 100000 with little insurance. Some women and children were rescued by volunteers. several occupants of the Concordia are missing.
