The April 8 Chicago election produced mixed results on street railways. Voters rejected immediate municipal operation by 120,911 to reach the required three-fifths, approved certificates up to 765 million for purchase and maintenance, and backed seeking municipal ownership under Mueller law, while Mayor Dunne expressed disappointment at the defeat of operation.
Major John H. Mecaslin prominent Atlanta banker and civic figure died of an acute indigestion at 278 Rawson Street. He led the Volunteer Firemen’s Association, sat on the city council in the Civil War era, helped form the department, and was survived by his second wife Blanche, a son, six grandchildren, a sister and two brothers.
Southern Engine and Boiler Works offers engines boilers saw mills wood working machinery shingles and lath mills plus Marsh steam pumps for industrial needs.
A Malta cablegram to the Herald reports the dry dock Dewey sending a wireless message sixty miles northwest of Malta stating the fleet is maintaining over 150 miles daily. Captain Blun faces opposition and ex Postmaster Doyle may enter. Blun returns soon after meeting Fourth Assistant Postmaster General Hitchcock on the charges.
Kansas City Missouri reports all fourteen upper house members and ten of fourteen lower house members elected yesterday are Republican. Only four lower house Democrats were successful while Mayor Beardsley, a Republican, leads with about a 1550 margin as Socialist vote remains minimal.
New York April 4 The Tribune reports Senator Depew likely will not return to the Senate this session due to a nervous breakdown after prolonged strain. Dr Bailey states the senator is recovering and expects to resume duties, but a lapse of several months is imperative.
A Jackson report says the Mississippi convict farm buildings were partly burned this morning with a loss of about 75000 dollars. Thirty horses four mules and several cattle and farm implements were destroyed. Officials suspect incendiary origin.
In Tuskegee Alabama the twenty-fifth anniversary events for the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute opened with a large gathering of leaders from business and professions. Booker T. Washington delivered a welcome address outlining the school’s work and history. Speakers included Robert C. Ogden Seth Low and Secretary of War William H Taft.
Savannah veterans vote to travel to New Orleans for the United Confederate Veterans reunion. General Sweat of Waycross issues orders. a large Savannah delegation will ride a special sleeper and use it as sleeping quarters. Col. J. H. Batti of McLaws Camp may join the trip.
A second miner survived twenty five days trapped in the Courrières mine, drawing intense excitement in France. The rescue followed days of anxious speculation, stirring anger toward the engineers overseeing the mine operation.
Norfolk Virginia April 4 The fast express on the Norfolk & Western Railroad ran into an open siding. Seven doctors and a wrecking crew were hurt en route to the scene. It is not yet known if anyone was killed or burned.
