Petersburg's Fourth of July program highlights a July 3 start with a town parade on Main Street to honor a coronation of the Queen. Fnatured events include a kids prize program, floats from neighborhoods and organizations, a soapbox derby, hydroplane water events, a street dance, and a variety of booths and contests funded by local groups and businesses.
Southeast Alaska independent loggers hold contracts under the U S Forest Service equating to three years normal cutting. They are expected to harvest about 155 million board feet for pulp plants and saw mills, with 444 million board feet already contracted and 222 million from contract loggers on large pulp sales. The Tongass National Forest may yield 377 million board feet in 1962 valued around 50 800 000 dollars. Stumpage prices in national forests slide from a 1959 peak with nine sales offers at 2 02 dollars per thousand board feet attracting no buyers.

The Icy Strait and Western District purse seine season began with about 300 boats. initial catches averaged 209 to 250 fish per boat, while Inian Islands sampling showed 400 per boat. Halibut landings across ports ran ahead of last year totaling 2 919 900 pounds, with area 3A and area 2 showing mixed progress. pink salmon were scarce and very small, prompting an alert for possible reduced fishing time next week as test fishing and announced openings proceed.
Alaska Fish and Game, Alaska Dept of Natural Resources, and U S Forest Service plan to designate the Stikine delta as a waterfowl management area. District ranger Harry Simpson announced a cooperative agreement to develop a wildlife management plan based on multiple use. The Forest Service office has a copy of the proposal and invites discussion from interested residents. The designation mirrors pre statehood control when federal agencies managed the area.
Mrs Bjarne Wallen leaves Sunday for Seattle to conduct business and attend the Alaska Day observance at the fair on July 7. Mrs Joy Foster will represent Petersburg at Alaska Day and plan a southern trip after the Fourth of July. she was appointed by the chamber of commerce to participate in Alaska Day. C Girard Davidson president of the Pacific Northern Lumber Mill in Wrangell visited Petersburg between planes on Wednesday en route to Wrangell for company business.
Teenagers report netting 48 dollars for the Hoff family fund at a dance last Saturday and 110.45 dollars from a day house to house canvass. Funds are placed in a bank account run by the VFW quartermaster Jack Massey to support the Hoff family during parents’ hospitalization. Pool drive proceeds include contributions from Lloyd John Ray Woods Mrs Leo Ness Mrs Ernie Sarff and Hammer Wikan with tickets selling well. A dance at the Sons of Norway is planned this Saturday to benefit the pool with a twist contest at 11 pm.
Funeral services were held Monday morning for William Jackson 28 who died from a personal safety related gunshot wound last Friday. Capt Chris Brewis of the Salvation Army officiated. Burial was in Petersburg Memorial Cemetery. He was born in Petersburg March 19 1934 and lived there most of his life. Survivors include wife Anita father Alex Jackson Petersburg mother Amy Mollin Sitka and siblings Alex Jr Oakland John Sitka Frances Milton Sitka Pallbearers were Pat Ridley Bob Schwartz Placido Manuel Ted Hasbrouck Rick Haube and Henry Heikkila.
Community events list two Independence Day period happenings. July 3 features a firemen's dance with local volunteers. July 4 offers band music in a public celebration, with details pending.

Alaska Fish and Game warns all commercial fishers that licenses must be valid kept in the licensee’s possession and ready for inspection at all times. A valid license is issued by the license division or its vendors and signed by the holder.

A belated reception for Mr. and Mrs. Al Dowd was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kito. About fifty guests attended. Mrs. Dowd is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips of Petersburg and plans to study at Chico State College next semester.
