Denny Heimdahl, 14, led the Hammer and Wikan Trout Derby for kids with a Dolly Varden of 21.25 inches. Kip Evans held second at 20.25 inches while Gale Kummer and Jerome Dahl posted 18.5 and 18.0 inch entries. seven year old Robbie Stranson had 12 inches. Last week’s prize went to Jerome Dahl for a fishing knife.

Fire destroys Martins' warehouse blamed on youths
Two fourteen year old boys playing with fire caused the destruction of the Martins warehouse owned by Magnus and Martins last Monday afternoon. Police Chief Speed Hoff reported the youngsters rolled paper into balls lit them and threw them from the warehouse window toward beachgoers below. A burning paper likely ignited highly inflammable rope as the fire department responded. Kiler Wikan saw the boys fleeing the building.

A 12 year old entered a Dolly Varden measuring 21 and a quarter inches. The weekly contest ends when the store closes tomorrow night.

Conferees agree to include Alaska in federal highway aid plan. Sen. Neuberger and Delegate Bartlett report Alaska would receive 11.456 million dollars in 1957 and about 15.657 million in 1969, with a long range program possible if House and Senate accept the report. Alaska currently gets funds via direct appropriations with fluctuating annual totals.

Halibut season ends for 1956 in British Columbia Alaska area 2
The International Pacific Halibut Commission says Area 2 will close June 27 after a 46 day official season and 38 day actual season. The fleet aims to hit the 1956 quota of 2.5 million pounds off the British Columbia and Alaska coasts south of Cape Spencer. Last Saturday’s catch was 15.0 million pounds, with weather delays and a seven day rest period extending the season.

FWS Relocates Stikine Gillnet Marker at Hour Point
The Fish and Wildlife Service moved the Stikine District marker on the south shore of Eastern Passage to Hour Point to clearly define the eastern boundary. The new position shifts the marker a notch east seven tenths of a mile and is not a conservation threat, officials say.

Halibut Prices Rise on Market Entry and Weather Improves
New buyers enter the market boosting halibut prices well above last year's levels. Seattle medium halibut prices have risen from 17.7 to about 24 cents per pound. Weather, described as the worst in 20 years by F. H. Bell, is improving offshore which could aid Area 3A fishing north and west of Cape Spencer. The fleet has landed about five million pounds so far, with a 28 million pound quota for 1956 season remaining.
