Petersburg hosts 1967 American Legion department convention
The 1967 Alaska American Legion department convention will be held in Petersburg after Homer hosted the 1966 gathering. Richard Kito of Petersburg attended the Homer meeting and invited officials to Petersburg where Kito was elected to a department post. New officers pictured: Chaplain William Thrasher Spenard Second Vice Commander Richard Kito Petersburg Department Commander William Kelm Haines First Vice Commander Henry Heinz Glenallen Sergeant-at-Arms John Kessel Fairbanks. Organizers then note a softball sign up at the ball field Sunday June 19 at 2 p.m. Head Start program began in Petersburg at the Salvation Army Hall for 4-6 year olds to prepare them for school.

Queen contest for Fourth of July postponed
Plans for a queen contest were dropped this week due to sponsor lack. The BPW chapter will run a prize award contest with many prizes led by a round trip for four to Bell Island and 100 expense money. Nomination coupons seek grand marshal candidates for the Fourth parade. a full event list will appear later.

Funeral for Mrs Delia Mus kavage Held in Portage
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Delia Muskav age 43 who drowned at Portage Bay June 7 along with two others. Born at Point Agassiz February 2 1923 she had lived here. Lt Bob Russell led Salvation Army rites. Survivors include her mother Mrs Dora Loseth a sister Mrs Dagny Norman brothers Leif David and Jim Loseth and children Mrs Dorothy Ingle Irene Williams and Ruby Williams all but Ruby Williams living here. Ruby Williams resides in Anchorage. Pallbearers named.

55 Pound King Salmon Leads Petersburg Derby
A 55 pound king salmon entered by Ted Kaine leads the Petersburg derby and weighs one pound less than last year’s winning fish by Joe Bigelow. The Wrangell derby lead is also cited as a comparison with Gordon Buness. Petersburg and Wrangell chambers bet on which derby yields the largest fish.

Wendell Kay Campaigning Here in Petersburg
Wendell Kay an Anchorage attorney and gubernatorial candidate arrived in Petersburg on a campaign trip with Mrs Kay. A no host dinner in the Elks lodge hall at 7 p.m. tomorrow honors Mr Kay. Campaign managers Roald Norheim and E E Norton say reservations are not necessary. Kay came to Alaska in 1946 as first executive director of the Alaska Housing Authority and later practiced law with Kay Miller Jacobs Libbey. He served in the Alaska legislature prior to statehood.
