Ninety nine scouts and 20 leaders from Ketchikan Wrangell Petersburg Juneau Douglas Skagway Nome Anchorage and Fairbanks toured Ladd Field hosted by 5001st Wing Commander Dale Gaffney and visiting commander Neil Van Syckle. They rode to the University of Alaska Ester Creek and Ladd Field installations and viewed sub zero rescue gear and new planes of the 449th All Weather Fighter Squadron.

43 Pound King Salmon Wins Ketchikan Derby
W. E. McKinley won $1,500 first prize in the Chamber of Commerce King Salmon Derby in Ketchikan. The event, postponed from the previous Sunday due to bad weather, saw few fish as rough seas persisted. McKinley’s salmon weighed 43 pounds 12 ounces, with John Grainger taking $600 for a 37 pound 12 ounce second place.

Alaska’s First City-Owned Terminal Opens at Juneau
The $150,000 municipal air port terminal near Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau is officially opened. The one story concrete building houses Pacific Northern Airlines Alaska Coastal and Pan American World Airways with customs immigration and a restaurant. A nursery by the Women’s National Aeronautical Association serves traveling mothers and children. The 168 by 50 foot structure is finished with birch and knotty pine and sits on the east side of the taxi strip.

Ed ward Brehm, a former Fairbanks man, becomes regional director of the Territorial Bureau of Veterans Affairs in Juneau after Frank Clayton resigns the post he has held since June 1946. Brehm previously served as assistant regional director in Anchorage under Robert Speegle and worked for First National Bank in Fairbanks. Clayton’s resignation was accepted without prejudice by the Alaska Territorial World War II Veterans Board meeting last Friday and Saturday.
