Saltwater Rearing Pens Declared Successful in Alaska

Gov William A Egan hailed Alaska s saltwater salmon rearing program as a significant achievement in fish culture The project showed three salmon species could be reared in saltwater pens for a year with minimal mortality and strong growth The Dept of Fish and Game and National Marine Fisheries Service released 52000 one year old coho and 18000 king smolts this spring with fish marked for later identification Roys noted sockeye smolts grew eight and a half inches vs about three inches in the wild and warned disease and salinity adaptation remain concerns as expansion continues with Sitka and Kachemak Bay pens to add capacity

Conservation society blasts Alaska forest management practices

The Alaska Conservation Society releases a resolution criticizing Ton gass National Forest practices and overall Alaska timber management. President Ernst Mueller cites 60 to 70 percent pricing with pulp scales, log raft waste, lost public funds, and environmental damage.

Agriculture Officials Visit Alaska on Forest and Land Use Tour

Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Robert W. Long and U S Forest Service chief John R. McGuire will visit Anchorage on June 17 for a week in Alaska. They will meet with federal and state officials, industry leaders, and researchers to review land use plans and proposed national forest areas under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. They will tour Fairbanks and Southeast Alaska including Sitka and Juneau and observe a balloon logging operation.

Weather Update With Light Rain and Fog Patches

Cloudy skies and light rain or showers with possible fog in the early morning. Light variable winds. Daytime highs around the low 60s and overnight lows in the mid 40s. Record high 62 and record low 34 both on June 11. Weekly rainfall totals 2.47 inches.
