A valve in the Blind Slough hydro line was forced open by wooden wedges, flooding the powerhouse interior and risking major electrical damage. City crews diverted flow, with temporary repairs planned via a steel girdle and air-injection tests as permanent fixes await safe shutdown of the main pipeline.
John R. Edgington has been named commercial fisheries management biologist for the Petersburg area replacing Norman Johnston who moves to the Southeast regional supervisor post. Edgington, joining the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in 1971, has worked on the North Slope inventory and as assistant area management biologist in Juneau before his Petersburg transfer. He holds BS from Oregon State University and MS from the University of Idaho. He and his wife Michele and daughter Sarah will relocate to Petersburg.
Congressman Don Young learned the Department of Health and Welfare granted $48,000 to Peters burg General Hospital on Wednesday to fund construction of a new dietary department. The grant will improve food service for patients.
In regular session the Petersburg City Council voted to invite Jim Witt and Tom Cashen to Petersburg for preliminary discussions aimed at ending a five week strike by city electrical workers. The council also authorized a letter to the IBEW and the Department of Labor requesting a meeting.
