Alaska readers praise Seattle efforts to avoid further ship stoppages and seek a coast wide agreement to prevent Alaska shipping tieups. They note prior strikes caused severe losses while praising Seattle residents for recognizing the shared problem and pushing for an Alaska coast cargo accord.
The Emblem Club invites members and families to a June 24 picnic at Sandy Beach at 6 o'clock rain or shine. Coffee buns and kolache will be provided. At the June 10 meeting final plans were set and officers were reminded to notify the president if they cannot attend. Mrs Wes Randrup gave a Flag Day reading during the program.
A sale of hand made gift articles organized by the Presbyterian church Missionary society will be held Saturday, June 14, in the former Men's Shop building. Mrs. Mary Reyes leads the local society after appeals at Wrangell Presbytery with donations from Missionary societies and Ladies Aid groups across Southeast Alaska.
Alaska Coastal Airlines adds a direct Juneau to Ketchikan flight on Tue Thu Fri at 11:30 a.m. The existing Juneau to Petersburg Wrangell Ketchikan service leaves at 11:15 a.m. daily. Ellis Air Lines adds a Ketchikan to Petersburg to Ketchikan routing on Mon Wed and Sat, departing Ketchikan at 1 p.m. and arriving Petersburg at 2 p.m. The change boosts seats out of Petersburg and aids Pan American connections.
Clifford Berg son of Hans Berg who has the contract for building the Mitkof Highway extension arrived here Tuesday from Juneau. He will reside during the road work while equipment for construction is moved from the Coastal Monarch which docked here Tuesday and other gear will come by barge from Metlakatla. Until steamships resume, machines and supplies from Seattle cannot arrive, Berg said.
The All Alaska Assemblies of God held in Juneau June 3 to 8 sent half a dozen delegates including C O Hirshey to the convention attended by about 100 representatives. A mission boat was purchased for Southeast Alaska with funds raised by Speed the Light. Four airplanes already operate in the Interior at Fort Yukon Aniak Fairbanks and McGrath.
Weather data from the CAA station reports a 70 high and 38 low on June 11 with 0.44 inches of precipitation. For 1951 the period lists 70 degree high on June 7 and 0.44 on June 12 with 4.68 inches of rain.
Philip Jerauld will conduct church services as an Episcopal lay reader at 11 a.m. this Sunday in Petersburg. He is spending summer near Petersburg with Pacific American Fisheries and will return to Berkeley for a second year at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. He hopes to serve in Alaska after ordination. Mrs. Dick Miller leads coffee hour after the service and invites former students and friends to attend.
Eastern Star members and families plan a picnic next Wednesday at Fall Creek with 5:30 p.m. start, weather permitting. If rain occurs, the event moves to Sandy Beach. Mrs. Ralph Hall chairs the committee and transportation is provided via Fryer’s Machine Works for those needing a ride.
R F Shuman Fish and Wildlife Service supervisor told Forest Service official George Reynolds that the Fall Creek fish dam project will be completed in early July despite current funding shortages. Marcus Myers will return to finish the job and the area will be policed and kept attractive.
Presbyterian workers announce a nine day Vacation Bible School at the Presbyterian Manse starting June 18 with three college trained young women leading the program. Eleanor Ruppert Norma Douglas and Virginia Ann Wolf arrive to supervise teaching and youth work as Rev. Ronald Snelling and family prepare to relocate.
Richard Colp, owner of Colp's grocery, has shut up shop and gone traveling for a couple of weeks. He is to return around June 28 and will be in the Seattle vicinity and Vancouver during his absence.
Discussion of the strike dominated the Chamber of Commerce gathering Tuesday noon. Shellfish shipments were briefly aided by a special boat chartered by Seattle firms. The Coastal Monarch’s timely arrival helped avert immediate shortages, but long term prospects remain grim amid ongoing Alaska steamship stoppages caused by labor unrest.
A Seattle citizen group creates a committee led by Thomas M. Pelly to relieve Alaskan cities hurt by the shipping strike. It aims to move ships, prevent Alaska disruptions, and draft long term policies for uninterrupted Alaskan service while avoiding labor disputes. Alaska Steamship offers vessels as relief ships under bareboat charter with Lifeline. SUP head Harry Lundeberg says unions will block ships with any involved company.
A local survey by Dr. R. C. Smith finds canned baby food supplies exhausted or low with no clear replenishment. Air delivery, while possible, carries prohibitive costs for young couples needing nourishment for infants. Medicinal supplies are also scarce.
Mr. and Mrs. L. R. McDonald departed Tuesday by air for an extended trip. They will visit McDonald for a medical checkup and then spend the remainder of the summer in the Pacific Northwest.
A record June 9 turnout of 42 votes elected Zella Greinier as senior regent for the coming year of Women of the Moose. Myrtle Jorgenson was named junior regent, Eileen Holmes chaplain, Ruth Greinier recorder, Hanna Decker treasurer, with Marjorie Heimdahl continuing as junior graduate regent. Retiring officers include Heimdahl and Wooton among others.
Mrs. Norman Tate announces plans to complete Civil Defense registration of American Legion Auxiliary members by Monday June 16. Kenneth Welde approves as Petersburg civil defense director. Mrs. Ernie Sarff leads as Auxiliary chairman for Civil Defense and civilian defense plans.
The scheduled S S Baranof sailing for June 13 was canceled on June 10. Local agent R I Miller was notified, bringing total passengers whose sailings were halted to 950.
Petersburg leader Carroll Clausen coordinates with Governor Gruening and the Seattle Alaska Lifeline committee to tally urgent needs for the next weeks as a shipping stoppage threatens float work and road extension to Blind Slough. Coastal Monarch cargo eased shortages yet baby food remain scarce. Dairy and poultry feed stocks cover limited months.
At 3 p.m. Wednesday the boat Robert Eugene, chartered by Pacific Fruit and Produce, docked with seven to eight tons of produce for the town. The firm will keep chartering during the shipping strike. The Silver Wave, a regular caller, will continue visits about every three weeks. The second boat aims to bring fresh produce roughly every ten days.
Cordova, a fishing town, experiences its largest red salmon run since 1924. Biologists link the surge to four six year cycles and five year cycles aligning. Fishermen anticipate a pack near 100000 cases as residents assist in the emergency.
