In June 1928 the Town Council voted unanimously to finish the high school auditorium. Enrollment is expected to reach 224 in the fall. Mr and Mrs Olsen will not live at Level Island this summer. Mrs Parks sails to Seattle for several months visit. The Trading Union deepens the channel at the public dock allowing boats to approach at all tide stages.
Kayler-Dahl Fish Co introduces a plan to fly fish from rivers unreachable by boat. Dean Kayler and Cris Dahl lead the project with Alaska Island Airlines pilots delivering supplies and establishing a base near Yakutat. Two tenders the Counselor Laddie and the Bernice A are deployed to haul sockeye salmon using Waco and Aeronca planes.
Funeral services for Oscar Nicholson will be held at Bonney Watson Funeral Home in Seattle on Saturday, June 12. The body was taken south on the SS Aleutian last Monday by his wife and daughter Luella, with the Sons of Norway escorting the remains to the boat. Honorary pallbearers included Hans Jenseth Anton Nereide Tom Lando Chris Odegaard George Nicholson Andrew Wikan Ivor Holm and Bert Espeseth. Nicholson was a charter member of Fedrelandet Lodge No. 23 of Petersburg.
Slight damage occurred when Chris Dahl’s plane touched water during take-off near Yakutat. The tail struck the water and forced a landing on the beach was made. Dahl earned his private license to fly this spring from Alaska Island Airlines.
Walt Peterson announced from the Seattle office that halibut settlements for the 1947 season will arrive upon completion. The cooperative paid 19.12 for mediums and 18.75 for chickens and large fish.
House Republican leaders urge swift enactment of the peacetime draft law after a 78 to 10 Senate vote. Speaker Martin says the House bill could reach the floor Tuesday or Wednesday with minimal debate and be sent to President Truman soon. House rules chair Leo Allen plans a Monday committee vote.
The Fourth of July celebration sponsored by American Legion Post 14 will be held Monday July 5 after city officials in Ketchikan and Juneau signaled plans. Warren Bailey, commander, says committees will be named soon and full program details will follow in the Press. Floats from local organizations and businesses expected. Boat races are being organized with a free-for-all handicap option and cash prizes for winners.
President Truman named Tracy S. Voorhees, 56, a New York attorney and former Army officer with World War II service and a Distinguished Service Medal, as assistant secretary of the Army. He has led the Army food administration for occupied areas since 1947, organizing relief supplies for Germany and Japan.
Council did not meet Monday evening because three members Stepelins Pederson and Jensen were out of town. The next council meeting is scheduled for June 21.
Georgia McDonald welcomed a granddaughter named Bonnie born May 17 to her son Don McDonald and his wife in Chicago. The infant weighs 7 pounds 8 ounces. Don is serving on an army boat in Manila and expected home this summer.
Jenning Grebstad son of Mr and Mrs John Grebstad arrived home last week on the SS Alaska to spend the summer here. Jenning has been attending the Pacific University in Forrest Grove Oregon. During the summer he will work for Pacific American Fisheries and return to school in the fall.
The Senate approved a bill permitting Canadian-flag vessels to land fish at Alaskan ports and extending similar privilege to American fishermen in Canadian ports. The measure moves to the White House for signature.
The Emblem Club held its last meeting before September and outlined a crab louis dinner on Saturday June 26 from five to ten to raise funds for a hospital operating table. Members and Elks and spouses may bring a guest. Plans also covered the Alaska Crippled Association carnival, a picnic June 22 at 6 p.m., and a Helmar II charter trip to Point Agassiz. Donations for the operating table fund may be left at the bank.
About 1400 Bristol Bay can nery workers will depart Seattle at noon tomorrow aboard the Cape Victory to join Bristol Bay operations. Some 2000 more will sail later to other Alaska points. The group will receive pay increases averaging 14.4 percent under a new Alaska Salmon Industry, Inc. agreement announced by Local 7 of the CIO union.
Mr and Mrs Gary of Petersburg will be outgoing passengers on the SS Alaska for its next southbound trip. They have bought a new car to drive to California and through the northwest. Their plans are indefinite and they may settle in the Midwest.
The Elks will face the American Legion softball team Friday at 7 pm for a seven inning game. Both teams trained this week and, weather permitting, should offer about two hours of entertainment. New equipment arrived including balls bats gloves and a catcher's mask. Stan Hansen of P.A.F. presented a new home plate and other field improvements are under discussion.
Petersburgh Lodge of BPO Elks will host Flag Day services at 8 p.m. in their hall. The program will be presented by lodge officers and the public is invited to attend.
Floodwaters from the Columbia River breach a dike guarding Portland’s 6.5 million airport and threaten the 43 million Reynolds Metals aluminum plant at Troutdale. About 800 workers race to save the final barrier as a 10 mile flood area expands, with water expected 10 to 12 feet deep. Rescue craft stand by while heavy rainfall is blamed for the breach.
Gilbert Smith aged 46 was found dead Saturday evening aboard his trolling boat near Indian Creek mouth on Prince of Wales island by a biological survey crew aboard Heron. An inquest in Wrangell ruled death from self inflicted wounds with a 22 caliber pistol. no foul play. He had worked in interior Alaska and Kodiak and is survived by parents in Kalispell Montana and a brother in Kodiak.
Agnes Myrtle Hammer Stephen died in a Seattle hospital last Sunday, June 6, after a brief illness. She was 31, born November 14, 1916, and lived in the community her entire life. She married John Blair Stephen on September 18, 1943, and they had a son, John. She leaves husband John, son John, her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Hammer, three brothers Norman Art and Jim, and sister Mrs. Jenny Rodenberg of Ketchikan. John Stephen and Jim Hammer will bring the body back for burial.
The Dorcas Circle of the Lutheran Ladies Aid announced a hot dog stand for the July 5 celebration. They will also sell coffee and Kool Aid.
City electrical engineer C A Krantz will be away for two weeks for a combined business and pleasure trip to the states. During his absence Don MacKechnie will assume the engineering duties.
A baby son named Gerald Silven was born to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Colp in Fairbanks on June 2. The infant weighed 8 pounds.
Local Boy Scout Troop 624 plans a ten day outing to White River near Ketchikan starting Sunday June 13. Led by Don Tesdal, they travel aboard the Helmar II with skipper Carl Vevelstad, stopping at Wrangell and Wrangell scouts. Camp runs June 12 to June 24 with Wrangell Peters burg and Ketchikan awaiting a first time gathering in years. All scouts meet at the Game Commission float at 6 a.m. Sunday.
West Coast Waterfront Employers accuse CIO longshoremen of unfair labor practices in a National Labor Relations board complaint. They charge the union with refusing to bargain, blocking contract clauses, and pressuring the industry to violate the law over hiring a dispatcher for the hiring hall who is currently union appointed.
Alaska 4-H members will again enter the National Poultry Contest with 15 medals for district winners and a $225 travel stipend for the territorial winner to attend the 4-H National Club Congress in Chicago from November 28 to December 2. Enroll with a local club leader. age rules require 14 by January 1, 1948 for trip winners, while district winners face no age restriction. Participants must keep records and write a story of their work for district agent submission in early September.
The 5800 ton Prince George left Vancouver on its first voyage to Skagway with Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce members aboard. The liner, carrying 322 passengers, will serve Vancouver to Southeastern Alaska starting June 19, per Malcolm J. Woods. Built at Esquimalt by Yarrows Ltd, it is the largest ship on Canada's west coast.
On Wednesday fourteen persons booked passage south on the SS Alaska due here today. Names include Mrs Louise Prueschoff, Kay Prueschoff, Andrew Jepson, Marie Gray, Mr and Mrs A P Reid, Mrs Warren Venderburg and four children, Mrs Martin Olson, Car ol and Kathryn French. Also LaVerne Sutton and Esther Lindenmeyer travel Friday. for Ketchikan Lawrence Knutsen.
The 1948 Pacific halibut season is expected to be one of the shortest on record, with Area 2 quotas raised to 25.5 million pounds and a May 1 start. Canada and the United States regulate annual catches, while Areas 3 and 4 hold 28 million and 0.5 million pounds respectively.
Halibut landings tapered this week as area two closed on June 4 with nine boats unloading. The Eunice sold for 6,000 the Brooklyn for 15,000 to Knut Thompson, unloading to Coop Arcade 16,500 Bravo 14,500 Vesta 9,000 Wave 4,500 Jackpine 12,500 Wesley 2,300 Edgecumbe 11,000. Larger boats moved to area three expected to hit quota by late July.
The National Safety Council reports 23 airlines totaled 7 billion passenger miles with no passenger or crew fatalities through last year. Pan American logged 1.44 billion miles from 1945 to 1947 without a fatality, and Northwest traveled five years since a fatal accident in 1942 between May and June 1947.
Jerry Hestad claimed first prize in the Elks Junior Trout Derby while no girls entered. Pete Varness was awarded second prize for the week.
