Wrangell Narrows project completes improvements
In June 1928 Wrangell Narrows saw completion of a half million dollar improvement program by Puget Sound Bridge and Dredge Co. The Burrard II dredge watched harbor activity as contracts awaited arrival while a 21 foot depth was achieved. Carroll Clausen organized trout planting for 10 000 fish at Blind Slough and Mrs. Hildebrandt donated flowers from Breeders Pass for Memorial Day decorations.

Forestry Students Cruise Timber Near Petersburg
The Wanigan 12 crew of final year forestry students led by Harold Anderson from the Forest Service in Juneau finishes cruising timber in the Petersburg division this week. They have surveyed several hundred million feet of sawtimber for sale to logging operators.

Special Session Considers Late-Night Liquor Hours
Town Council in the City Clerk’s Office held a three hour session to discuss extending closing hours for cocktail lounges and liquor stores from 11 pm to midnight on weeknights and from 11 pm to 1 am Sunday. Four members debated with two in favor two against. A loan from the general fund was approved to cover current expenses. James Taylor named tax assessor with $300 allowance. Police Chief James Rhodes allotted $150 extra for May work.

Express Appreciation For Poppy Day Support
The Peters burg Unit No. 14 of the American Legion Auxiliary thanks residents of Petersburg Scow Bay West Petersburg and Kake for supporting the veteran made poppies on Poppy Day and to merchants who trimmed poppy windows. Funds finance rehabilitation work for ill and disabled veterans and auxiliary volunteers serve without pay.

She departs by steamer from New York after a Seattle Spain route, visiting relatives for the first time since 1920. The evening featured Pinochle and refreshments.

Local Petersburg Figure Oscar Nicholson Dies at 68
Oscar Nicholson a longtime Petersburg Alaska resident and cannery executive died suddenly from a heart attack last Saturday evening at his home. Born in Levang er Norway he came to Alaska in 1902 working for Alaska Packers before moving to Petersburg. He built the town theater and pool hall and later bought the Scow Bay cannery in 1931. He was married to Alma Cornstad in 1928 and leaves two daughters Darlene and Luella. Mrs Nicholson planned to accompany the body south for burial.

Halibut Boat Catches Record Red Snapper Off Alaska
The Cascade, skip per Albert Strom, turned a record sebastodes haberrimus over to a Ketchikan laboratory after a 600 foot depth catch between Warren and Coronation islands. The 43 pound fish measures 46 inches long with a 34 inch girth after cleaning.

Fisherman Spencer Hestad brought in a 12 inch Dolly Varden to win the weekly prize a $1 gift certificate for fishing tackle announced Ed Hageman chairman of the Ellis Junior Trout Derby committee. With the contest in full swing several fish expected to be on display in the Recreation window soon. No fish have been brought in by the girls yet.
