City Council and Harbor Committee discuss moorage for transient vessels at 50 cents daily after 48 hours. Petersburg fishers cause shifting stalls and free two days for returns, raising collection issues. A 4:30 Harbor Commission meeting may form a citizen-staffed body to balance costs and services.
The Coast Guard and a local fishing vessel reported Japanese stern trawlers and a longliner just outside the 12 mile zone near Cape Spencer. The Albatross arrived in under two hours, Soviet vessels not sighted, helicopter patrols ongoing, and officials urged reports of violations to Coast Guard in Juneau or Annette air station.
The International Pacific Halibut Commission reports end of May landings at 11.4 million pounds, 25 percent of the 40 million pound 1972 catch limit. Area 2 totals 5.1 million pounds with notable vessel trips over 100,000 pounds. Area 3 reaches about 6.1 million pounds, split 3.1 million to Canadians and 3.0 million to U.S. fishermen. Prices hit record highs in May with halibut selling up to 66 cents per pound in Alaska ports.
Alaska Governor William A. Egan pledged action against foreign boats within the 12 mile limit after complaints from Tununak Umkumute and Tooksook Bay on Nelson Island. He said authorities will pursue any vessel caught encroaching, without detailing plans.
Alaska sold 30 million dollars of general obligation bonds at 5.1552 percent, led by John Nuveen & Co. The Revenue Commissioner says the low rate could lift Alaska’s credit rating from its current BAA-1 toward an A rating within six to twelve months. Six bids came in below the weekly average, with Bank of America at 5.1569 percent. Proceeds will fund roads schools and the university among other projects.
Four Peters burg residents Ricardo Haube Julia Grant and her two sons Frederick 16 and Vernon 14 went missing after leaving for a fishing trip to Thomas Bay Saturday. A Coast Guard and local Search and Rescue effort spread across Thomas Bay Cape Strait and Annette Island. The group was found by a passing boat and brought back to Peters burg Monday afternoon after engine trouble left them adrift.
Petersburg Police Captain reports two suspects arrested and charged with larceny in a vessel felony. Thomas I Evenson aged 27 and Ricardo Haube face charges after probe into theft of 250 dollars of hali but gear from FV Rap II owned by Olaf Hemnes of Seattle. They were released from custody pending trial.
