U S Senator Ernest Gruening urged Alaska Canada cooperation on a border road and criticized neglect of Alaska as a territory. About 80 attended his Elks Hall talk and 70 joined a prior dinner. He called for increased public works funds and favored special Alaska road funding to connect to a new border route.
A single 76 foot halibut boat the Northern Dawn captained by Johnnie Johnson landed 182000 pounds of halibut near the Shumagin Islands southeast of the Aleutians. The eight member crew will share about 6000 dollars each. It set a record for a single boat and tied the port’s top haul on the Pacific coast with the previous record 163000 pounds from last year.
Kenneth D. Johnston Jr., 82, national vice president of the Jaycees, visited Petersburg yesterday. Local leaders and guests hosted a cocktail party at American Legion Hall and a dinner at Winnie's. He tours the island, meets with Jim Thompson and other officials before continuing his trip north.
The city moves to require licenses for all cars and trucks. The deadline to purchase licenses was May 31 yesterday. Licenses may be bought at the city clerk's office, not the deputy magistrate's office as previously reported.

Sitka Alaska obituary notes funeral services held for Carl Nygaard age 2 who died at Pioneer’s Home. Born in Norway he immigrated to Alaska in 1910 and lived in Petersburg as a fisherman.
The Women of the Moose announce a bake sale on June 9 and a meeting on Monday June 4 at 8 p.m. The Academy of Friendship oversees the meeting with entertainment planned and refreshments to follow. Officers will be elected and ritual practice will be held tonight at 8 o’clock at the Moose hall.
Funeral services held for Petersburg resident Peder Lero 71. He died of a heart attack while fishing aboard a beached trolling boat Emily T near Point Fredrick and Sandy Beach. Lero, born May 16, 1891 in Bergen Norway, leaves wife Ann and brother Johan. He served in the merchant marine in World War I and helped found a local Sons of Norway lodge.
Mrs Carl Beyer was elected president of the Civic Improvement Council at the irregular meeting May 23. Mrs Robert Schwartz became vice president and Mrs Harold Lee Jr was replaced as secretary by Mrs Elder Lee. Plans were made to suggest a Home Improvement Award winner and to organize neighborhood clean up parties next week.
The Rev. David Crawford and twelve Presbyterian Youth Fellowship members attend the annual Rainbow Glacier camp for senior high youth this week. In Crawford’s absence Rev. Jack Anderson will speak at the Sunday worship service on June 3, with Rev. Schwab as conference dean and Crawford teaching "Our Beliefs." Petersburg attendees include Jean Reid Lynn Stroma Patsy Magill Gloria Zepp Gordon Wahtp ES Zepp Betty aouby Billie Snow Jim Dick and Alex Reid.
The Rev. Bernard Hubbard known as the Glacier Priest died of a heart attack at his Santa Clara home. The University of Santa Clara figure earned his title for leading Arctic expeditions and scientific work.
Separate sealed bids will be opened June 15 for three surplus state buildings in Dillingham Sutton and Auke Bay. The wood frame structures were declared surplus by the Alaska Department of Public Works. The Auke Bay building is an 18 by 18 foot unit near Government Float.
John Morrison president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Central British Columbia will visit Petersburg on June 15 with his wife. The tour includes Ketchikan June 13 and Wrangell June 14. The BCC has backed the Stikine Iskut highway project and BC highway 16 upgrades. A luncheon is planned during the Petersburg stop.
A committee of tidal hydraulics experts from the Army Corps of Engineers will spend a week in Alaska starting Sunday at Ketchikan to study tidal problems. They will review Dry Strait near Wrangell the Gastineau Channel near Juneau and areas for proposed causeways at Knik and Turnagain Arm near Anchorage. The 12 engineers headed by J. B. Tiffany will meet Alaska District Engineer Sel. Christian Hanberger and his hydraulics staff in Ketchikan.
Six year old Linda Wright of Point Baker was airlifted south for specialized care after a skull fracture from a fall on rocks at Point Baker. She was treated by Dr. R. C. Smith in Petersburg and sent to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle in good condition.
In a May 19 ceremony at Ascension Church New York City Sam Kito Jr and Judith Meyers wed attended by family friends. The bride daughter of Howard and Mrs Meyers Philadelphia and the groom son of Sam Kito Petersburg. They plan to reside in Alaska after August course completion.
Former Petersburg resident Mrs. Johanna Burman arrives from Shelton Washington to visit for the summer. She is a house guest of Mrs. Mabel Lindstrom.
The Civil Aeronautics Board sets June 18 as tentative start for hearings on an air service pattern revision between Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Alaska’s Stikine district closes to commercial salmon fishing from May 31 noon until June 18 at midnight with 6 inch mesh rules, due to the weakest king salmon run on record.
Dorothy Otness expresses gratitude to Petersburg friends who aided her six children after their father John Robert Otness was lost in the Teddy J disaster last month. She says she worries about raising six kids alone but finds comfort in friends’ support.
Nominations are accepted until June 15 for library board positions. Current nominees include Mrs. Lyle Roundtree Mrs. Gordon Jensen Mrs. Erling Nicholson and Mrs. Mary Reid. Terms run two years with ballots due by June 30.
Mr Dennis L Heimdahl and Miss Irma Lillian Linstrom married Saturday evening May 26 at the home of Norman Heimdahl in Juneau. Baha i Assembly officials officiated as vows were exchanged beneath a floral bower. the couple will reside in Juneau until the groom joins National Guard duty at Fort Ord California.
The Alaska capital relocation issue risks being left off absentee ballots for the primary unless the state supreme court approves a modification to a Juneau injunction. Attorney General Ralph Moody urged court action. Chief Justice Buell Nesbett did not discuss potential procedures. The case, appealed from Juneau Superior Court, began after 7 000 residents petitioned to vote on moving the capital from Juneau to Western Alaska. The City of Juneau filed suit and secured the injunction, now under appeal.
Anchorage. James M. Bogan secretary of the defunct American Bankers Mortgage and Loan Corp pleaded innocent in Superior Court to selling securities without registration and failure to file income tax returns. Bond set at 2500 each indictment. Ralph Browne vice president pleaded guilty to tax return failure fined 1000 and probation for two years. State seeks Tom Browder president as firms linked to several failed investment firms caused over 3 million dollars in losses to stockholders.
Calvin Tompkins faced disorderly conduct charges with a $25 fine. Emil Helberg of Seattle was fined $50 for public intoxication. Mrs. Mary Balsinger received a $10 fine for speeding in Deputy Magistrate Vernon Counter's court this week.
