Asa Dak lugie, president of the Mescalero Tribal Council, announced four day ceremonial dances and festivities from Friday July 1 to July 4. Adults pay 25 cents daily, schoolchildren admitted free. The event marks the maidens coming out, with four debutantes this year, plus rodeo and baseball events.
Miss Mary Viola Walker and Mr Major J. Keith of Cloudcroft were married June 25 with Justice D M Barringer presiding. A license to wed was issued this week to Miss Lottie Lester and Mr Marion Cojo of Mescalero.

Major Gordon W. Little, known as Pawnee Bill, former Buffalo Bill associate, stayed in Carrizozo on June 23 en route to visit Uncle Geo. Coe at Glencoe, survivor of Billy the Kid era. He traveled with Rev. J. W. E. Airey, president of the National Frontiersmen’s Association, and Mrs. Nellie Ruffner, his nurse. They plan to interview Elizabeth Garrett in Roswell before heading to Fort Sumner and Taos to study early frontier history.
Rupert F. Asplund, Director of Taxpayers' Association of N. Mex., notes public support for government reform. Citizens and taxpayers back improved structures, waste elimination, better services, honest elections, fair reapportionment, long term planning, competent purchasing, prudent debt, budget control, accurate accounting, auditing, court reform.
Lee Boswell traveling representative for the Wilson Packing Co. was arrested Wednesday night by State Highway Patrolman Speight and charged in justice court with reckless driving. He was bound over to the district court in the sum of $350. The bond was furnished by friends.
Dr. E. P. Simms C. N. Chappell and John Collins represented Alamogordo at the Highway 54 Convention in Corona on Monday June 27 with 90 delegates from El Paso to Dalhart Texas. The Corona Business and Women's Club hosted a free luncheon and a follow up meeting was set for Vaughn in 60 days.
The Methodist Junior Stewards won four straight games last week defeating Mountains Lions 9 0 Douglas Cubs 12 8 All Stars 25 12 and the second game against Douglas Cubs 29 4. Denney pitched a three hit game and Gutierrez held four hits in the first inning then no hit ball for 8 innings. The team shows vim and pep and will face Grace Methodist Church players before road trip.
Beneficial rains continue in Weed New Mexico with multiple visitors and residents. Funeral services for T. F. Fleming, known as Uncle Tom, were held in Weed after his Alamogordo death, with many friends and relatives attending. He was remembered as a Christian and financier whose influence lasts in the region.
Funeral services were held at Weed Church for T F Fleming conducted by Rev Earl R Keating. Interment followed beside his wife in Weed. Fleming, born November 22 1856 in Caldwell County Texas, died June 25 1938 in Alamogordo at 81 years seven months. He moved with his family to Texas and New Mexico, lived in Weed Avis Pinon and Sacramento Mountains, served as assessor, and leaves seven children and many relatives.
Showers over the forest reduce the fire hazard and boost vegetation. Moore travels to Albuquerque June 26 for regional office matters while Mrs Moore visits friends. The forest sees green mountains and good recreation, with roads drying after rain. A new metal telephone line from Cloudcroft to Mayhill progresses, aiming for September finish. Lookout tower improvements at Wofford and Mayhill resume after fire duties. CCC camp F-32-N to disband June 30. new company to take over and some personnel move to Camp F-24-N or other NM camps.
The Daugherty and Fleming families express gratitude for kind words and flowers during illness and death. Also noting Dr. Arthur King, optometrist, at Sorenson's Jewelry Store each Saturday for eye exams and lenses.
The U S Hiway 54 convention in Corona on Monday June 27 drew about 100 delegates, praised as one of the best attended in New Mexico. Delegates urged immediate blacktopping of gravel sections and completion of unimproved parts, with a delegation to visit the state capitol to press the program. A follow up meeting was set within 60 days at Vaughn to review the committee report for highway improvements.
A tax dispute involving Tres Ritoa Land and Cattle Co over about 1800 in taxes on cattle on a Three Rivers range was continued to Friday July 1 on motion by the company. The case questions whether the range is a warehouse qualifying for free duty under a federal bond statute. Attorneys sought more time to prepare an exhibit showing cattle bonded from Mexico for a three year term.
The Otero County Crippled Children's Committee will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday July 6 at the Court House in Alamogordo. Members will discuss committee business and local arrangements for disabled children services.
Robert Goslin of Murcia underwent an appendectomy Monday with satisfactory recovery. Jack Holloman recently left for recuperation at Ruidoso after an appendectomy. Frank Carr Jr. remains hospitalized for infected tonsils. Mrs. B G Robertson traveled from Tularosa for surgical treatment. Beach and baby returned home to Orogrande. Clarence Morgan returned for further infected foot surgery and is recovering. Horace Hawkins 13 from Lubbock was brought from Cloudcroft after a double spiral fracture at the Y M C A camp. parents took him home Monday.

The Soil Conservation Service and New Jersey orchardists report heavy mulch applied in fall and plowed in spring as the cheapest method to regain topsoil over 2 to 3 years, with nitrogen adjustments depending on mulch type. Notice from A Green Town Marshal warns all dog owners with unpaid 1938 licenses to pay by August 1. If unpaid, license fees rise from 1.00 to 1.50 for males and 2.00 to 2.50 for females, with penalties enforced after 30 days.
The state comptroller's office decrees a uniform bookkeeping system for all state educational institutions. Deputy comptroller C R Sebastian says the plan standardizes budgets and quarterly reports and aims to extend to all state institutions in time.
The Alamogordo Band hosts its first outdoor concert July 7 at 7 30 p m with 80 players performing overtures marches and selections. Weekly practice continues each Tuesday in July and a beginning band class is being organized for interested children with instrument fittings via Mr McGuire at the high school.
Mr and Mrs John Means celebrated their golden anniversary at La Mesa New Mexico near the Rio Grande. The event was hosted by relatives from Alamogordo Cloudcroft Llano and other Texas areas with a large reception at the Methodist church lawn and a celebratory wedding cake after the ceremony.

Washington reports Senator Hatch drafts a sweeping measure to ban political activity by all federal and state officers. The plan extends current civil service rules to include state officials and could withhold federal funds from states lacking such laws. Penalties would include fines imprisonment and removal from office.
Visalia journalist L W Ripple writes from Visalia California thanking Weed advertisers for five years of support in Otero County and previews travels through five states to California He notes the San Joaquin Valley citrus crops and the Sequoia National Park nearby and mentions plans to teach in California next year plus local community notices and upcoming fundraisers.
Buster Prather visited Cloudcroft to arrange advertising for the fifth annual rodeo scheduled for August 12 13 and 14. The event promises usual rodeo events and a larger crowd due to increased summer attendance at the popular resort.
Mr and Mrs Lee Mathewson of Lakewood New York travel southwest for a summer tour visiting White Sands Mescalero Reservation Gran Quivira and other sites from Woodside Tourist Cabins Three Rivers New Mexico They are joined by former Otero County teacher Hanna Greenberg Tarrell and Emilie Johnson a former Mountain Park teacher
Six El Paso Rifle Club shooters visited Alamogordo for a morning practice match at 200 300 and 600 yards. Jack Moore led with a 50x50 at 600 yards while A Jacobs Robinson and Huddleston shot 49x50. Captain Grant EB Anderson and Trujillo fired practice shots for Alamogordo. Helen Johnson topped El Paso scores.
Mrs Frances Young hosted a Church of Christ bridal shower for Mrs Robert Elkins on June 23. Mrs W M Hayes gave a second shower for Mrs Elkins on June 28 while Mrs Charles Beasley hosted a visit for Mrs Jennie Hardin of Bertram Texas visiting her brother J Y Latham and sister Miss Aina Latham. H E Alden piano tuner and salesman for El Paso Piano Co will be in Alamogordo area in early July at Fryes.
