Friends and family mourn John Mimms Jr age 14 who died near Grants New Mexico on June 16 after a riding accident. He was thrown from a horse during a skittish ride and struck by a fence, fracturing his skull and suffering a fatal head injury.
S P Roach sealer for Breece Lumber died suddenly at Cloudcroft from quick pneumonia. He had served as a government forester with the national forests of Arizona. Survived by wife and two children. Funeral by Masons held locally. remains to be shipped to Tempe Arizona for burial.
Superintendent Small at the New Mexico School for the Blind received by express a six month old registered Holstein bull from Colorado Springs. A Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind letter details the animal s noble lineage with notable cows and sires including Cathedral hook Pontiae Hengerveld Institute Betty loutine and Oliver Denver Tivany along with test averages and milk production figures.
J W Paxton aged 12 of Elk New Mexico died at Rousseau Hospital after being shot while rabbit hunting on June 20. The bullet from a .22 calibre rifle struck his stomach and kidney, arriving at the hospital Thursday night and dying Tuesday afternoon. His family are long-time residents with wide sympathy.
An Alamogordo News report cites a town trustee alleging city workers burned trash on streets, damaging about 75 young trees. He saw a worker tear four limbs from a sapling and officials claim no care was taken, prompting calls for permanent payroll removal.
El Paso Herald reports Durant Motor Company’s new cotton picking machine seen as a key to labor shortages in the valley. Idus T Gillett of the Southwestern Irrigated Cotton Growers' Association notes the device could substitute for four pickers, plucking two rows at once and offering cleaner work. The machine, endorsed by the American Cotton Growers' Association and sponsored by the Southwestern association, will be placed in the valley before harvest.
Plans underway for the annual Ruidoso Baptist association encampment to be held July 6 to 14 in Ruidoso New Mexico. The event features a 5000 seat tabernacle music by a 30 piece orchestra and free food supplies funded by local business leaders with a $2 registration fee for attendees.
Judge Prenger re appointed Vida Robinson R B Fields J M Walker to county board and named Dr KD McKinley as new member. Ex officio member A E Thomasih superintendent of schools remains on the board as part of its constitution.
At the New Mexico state convention in Carlsbad Mrs. Carrie Cusack of Alamogordo relinquished the state presidency and was elected a delegate to the National Convention of the Woodmen Circle opening in Seattle on July 10 1929. She will travel to the coast with her husband Mr. Cusack accompanying to Los Angeles before she proceeds to Seattle.
Several households along New York avenue heard a truck stop nightly. Mrs. Mitchell and others repelled marauders. The next morning porch chairs and settees were missing. A pile of such items was found down the F Paso road, suggesting the truck broke down and thieves dumped goods to avoid identification.
A $2,600 fund funds a campus swimming pool project at New Mexico State College with bids received for cement work ahead of a $4,500 completion cost. A $15,000 dairy building nears occupancy housing offices, labs, and testing rooms with nearly $5,000 in equipment including cream separators and pasteurizers.

Las Cruces youth Paul HL Stoes son of Mr and Mrs Henry Stoes recently gave a violin recital in Paris at Maison Sdeyel under Jacques Thibaud and Lucien Capet. The event drew a full house and is noted as a signal honor for the artist. He travels to America via Berlin Amsterdam and London and plans a summer visit to Las Cruces.
Washington reports the Senate approved a Robinson amendment by 69 to 5 to allow open consideration of executive nominations and permit senators to reveal how they voted in executive sessions. Five senators opposed including Couzens who warned he would not be bound by secrecy.
Several couples were united in marriage in Alamogordo and nearby towns. Miss Mattie Ivans wed bk Wenniger June 2 in Pinon with Justice Karl Sanders officiating. Irene Choate married Clyde Nicholson on June 25 in Alamogordo. Dorothy Campbell and Jim Sutton joined in marriage June 25 in Alamogordo. Maude M. Dorsey and Euel F. Bogges wed June 25 in Cloudcroft and Alamogordo respectively.
Alamogordo will host several thousand visitors for the rodeo and celebration next week and as many as a thousand more will pass through town on the way to other Otero county attractions. Citizens are urged to extend a welcoming hand and courtesy to all guests to ensure they enjoy their stay and are encouraged to return or recommend Alamogordo to friends.
The June term in Otero County Circuit Court convened with Judge Frenger presiding. Cases include Sheesan Co vs Longwell continued. several divorces awarded by default. a child support order set at 150 monthly. a note suit against A Green verdict by default. and a state compensation case under advisement. Juvenile wards Durán and Colmonero paroled to parents. other youths sentenced for burglary and assault. aliens turned over to border patrol.
The Ro deo Association reports steady sales of concessions for the two day event. Vendors are set for Alameda Park, the ball park, courthouse grounds, and vacant ground north of the pavilion where the merry go round Ferris wheel and miniature train will operate.
HU L Kent president of New Mexico State College says he will try to attend the rodeo. Governor Dillon sends regrets due to July 4 6 and 6 duties. Dr Criles secretary notes the doctor is out of Santa Fe but may accept. Mayor Thomason regrets will be in Midland July 3 and 4.
A note from Col. Idaho Bill, famed Old West exemplar, offered outlaw branches to the Rodeo Ass'n but was refused as local cayuses ensure adequate backing. He is noted for roping wild animals for zoos and possessing a rifle alleged to have belonged to Billy the Kid. The West figure is a frontiersman showman ranchman roper.
Attorney Ethell of the Miamogordo Rodeo association says a soliciting committee is meeting for subscriptions to expense funds. Strong contributors who support the event finance should assist the effort while additional angles of the matter are being explored.
Judge Frenger named three jury commissioners George Moffett Martin Brown and Charles Bell to pick 370 potential jurors from county voters Alamogordo and Tularosa hold most voters and a table by Chas E Thomeus shows precinct quotas meeting New Mexico statutes.
The West Texas Chamber of Commerce announces its fourth annual motorcade will pass through Otero County on July 16. The route starts in El Paso, goes to the Caverns, then Cloudcroft Rutadoso and ends in Roswell, avoiding Alamogordo.
Secretary Todd of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce received a personal letter from Governor Dillon requesting that Otero County literature be sent to his office for reference to inquirers. Todd promptly forwarded the requested materials.
The state highway commission will review the new signboard law and decide enforcement steps. Lee Williams of Williams Poster Company Las Vegas and other highway signboard operators will be heard by the commission.
Monday morning about 3 oclock the Patterson house burned after neighbors Mr and Mrs John Hand raised the alarm. Firemen arrived too late to save the dwelling but the garage with stored goods escaped. Insurance on the house was about 1500 with some on the contents. oo F Walton reports.
Mr and Mrs Kal Slough of Norton Quay County New Mexico visited Alamo Gordo Tuesday and Wednesday greeting old friends. Slough, once a James Canyon farmer now in Quay County, says Hot Springs treatment eased his rheumatic affliction. He notes Sacramento Mountains offer easy living and pleasant climate despite winter chill.
The Alamogordo Rotary Club posted a 94 percent attendance for May, among the top clubs in district 42. Visitors included Rotarian Hill and wife from El Paso, and Mr. Evhell, secretary of the Alamogordo Rodeo Association, who reported on rodeo plans for July 3rd and 4th and future celebrations. Officers and directors are supporting the effort to ensure a successful event.
The rodeo association asks business people and citizens to contribute funds to match the unpaid work of officers and board members. The arena director will receive a modest two day payment, the only official connected with the event to be compensated. Preparations are satisfactory for the July 3 and 4 crowd. Frank C. Nagle leads parade arrangements and urges decorations and entries from businesses and residents.
George Shipley and Mose Cauthen tease companions about a July 7 excursion across Western Colorado to Gallup Shiprock Mesa Verde and lakes and rivers near Gunnison Glenwood Springs Grand Junction and return. Shipley boasts Western Colorado knowledge and fishing hoped for. Cauthen’s wind rubber habit worries some friends.
Dr H E Burke entomologist for the U S Department of Agriculture returns to Sacramento forests to study a mysterious bug harming Douglas Fir timber near Cloudcroft. Specimens sent to experts have not identified the insect yet as it enters trees to lay eggs and exhibits four life stages. Burke aims to learn its life cycle to develop control methods.
Oklahoma City reports that 40 years after aiding the Dalton gang Cattle Annie travels to Albuquerque to wed Jack Dalton. Dalton, once outlaw, later reformed. he had written from prison and now seeks marriage as Annie’s wedding date approaches amid memories of Guthrie jail breakout.
John Lawrence, en route from El Paso to Sault Ste Marie Michigan, died on a train at Tularosa Saturday. Accompanied to Alamogordo by Dr Ira Young, Lawrence felt fine on departure but died within a half hour. He leaves a wife and two children in Michigan. The Lawrences came to Fort Stanton five years ago for health, later moving to Alamogordo before a relapse and final decline.
Ed LeBreton of the town office visited El Paso to recover about $900 for O Bannon fruit shipped earlier. The O Bannon concern failed late last week and LeBreton learned from the express company he may receive only 10 to 26 percent of the amount as the business was in the hands of a credit association.
Work at the Alamogordo area site uncovered walls up to four feet high and a notably preserved skeleton with a bowl covering the face. Floor sections revealed embedded pottery fragments, hinting ancient placement rather than flood action. Excavation pauses end this week due to limited funds, with resumes next year funded by Kansas State University and other sources.
A destructive blaze in Hubbel Canyon burned about 60 acres on Saturday. Local fire warden Lon Hunter of Southwest Lumber Co. and a small crew fought the flames, preventing further spread and extinguishing the fire within hours.

Carlsbad June 25 Four new potash test holes costing about 100000 will be drilled by the Sullivan Machinery Co of Chicago in southeastern New Mexico Three will be in Eddy county and one in Chavez county The bureau of mines has drilled 16 potash test holes to find an economical method for taking potash from extensive southern New Mexico deposits The government has appropriated a half million dollars for potash tests with 100000 available each July 1 funding the four new holes next year
