Old Age Aid Keeps Martinez Family Hopeful in New Mexico
Jose Martinez, about 80, and his wife rely on monthly old age assistance from the New Mexico Department of Public Welfare. Once prosperous as a cowboy and trader with a 3000 head sheep herd, he lost payment for a sold herd after being cheated. Now living on 15 acres, they stay housed and content, tending a small garden and welcoming visitors as their family fades.

Local Baptist Group Sweeps Awards at New Mexico Convention
The Training Union of the First Baptist Church won nearly all honors at the Baptist Training Union Convention of New Mexico held in Clovis. The church earned all four silver cups and the Efficiency Banner for state best records over eight months. Miss Flossie Osborn won the Better Speaker contest. Myrtle Stillwell and Blanche Keating led sword drills. Billie Babers took second in Story Telling. Osborn and Stillwell will represent New Mexico at the Southwide Assembly in Ridge Crest, North Carolina, July 24–29.

Natatorium Contract Set for New Mexico School for the Blind
Bids opened for a new natatorium at the New Mexico School for the Blind with Archie Hern of Albuquerque winning at 26950 dollars. The 142 by 106 foot steel and concrete building will include a 35 by 60 foot pool, separate locker rooms, showers, toilets, and a children's swimming area. Mescalero Forest Fire Brought Under Control
A new Mescalero Reservation fire, starting Tuesday, burned about 500 acres by Thursday noon but was controlled by afternoon. Origin traced to a spat fire from a week earlier that had scorched roughly 1500 acres. Crews from Mescalero Indians, Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service, and grazing department fought it, patrolling with water trucks and horses. Diesel Bulldozer helped carve a 12 foot perimeter to contain the blaze near the Lincoln National Forest boundary.

Forest Service reports progress on Lincoln National Forest roads
Three crews are engaged on Lincoln National Forest road maintenance with two crews on the Sacramento Division and two on the Capitan and White Mountain Districts. Despite low spring and early summer moisture, roads are open and being improved. Rains aid fire control though the season continues with precautions and visitor cooperation. A Sealer's cabin at Spring Canyon Agua Chiquita will be finished this month using rough sawed bevel siding and brown stain to blend with surroundings. CCC boys from Camp F-32-N have treated several hundred acres in rodent control to protect erosion structures.
