Special correspondence from Betty Gabriel details Westfield events across a busy period. Betty notes a hospital admission at St Vincent Sioux City, a Hawar den horseshoe finals win, a harvest supper fundraiser, patching for Ak ron Hospital, a harvest supper planned for Oct 3, and a Westfield P T A meeting with a librarian fund plan and a 285 pupil 17 teacher enrollment.
Akron historical notes recap events from 20 years ago and earlier including football losses to Elk Point and Westfield, Akron baseball wins over Hudson and Yankton, family milestones such as births and marriages, obituaries for Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. Fickbohm, road improvements and wartime meatless day observance, and veteran local anecdotes spanning 1913 to 1948 with names, dates, and places like Akron Riverside cemetery and Union county S D.

The Pep Club plans to raise school spirit with matching uniforms during basketball season. Tryouts will be held later this fall for a girls drill team to perform during games. A candy sale last Friday funded activities. New advisor is Miss Borchers. Officers include President Mary Gossard, Vice President Wanda Brown, Secretary Sandy Bean, and Treasurer Marlys Nannen.
The first F H A meeting was held September 9 at Akron High School gym. New officers include President Joe Lynn Tucker and Vice President Wanda Brown. Committees listed with chairmen and chapter mothers named. Members entered and planned the FHA calendar. a skit explained the emblem. District Convention in Paulina Iowa on September 28 with bus rides offered. Susie Sypherd to be installed as District Representative.
Girls first week covered the Phillip's JCR motor ability test and introduced softball with a fourth week American Association of Health Physical Fitness Test. The program emphasizes 13 activities and notes Kennedy administration support. Boys also took the Phillip's JCR motor ability test in week one and will participate in the National AAPHER fitness tests in week four, teaching 14 activities.
Mr Hoffmans twelve senior math students study trigonometric functions of angles and right triangles and will begin logarithms and approximations. Two geometry classes total twenty six students study points lines and postulates, plus plane determination and constructions.
Coach Murrell expressed optimism for Akron High School’s 1968 football season noting the team’s chances depend on improved offense. Players reportedly practiced about 40 hours before the first game as 12 pants, six red jerseys, six white jerseys were added and all helmets were repainted red.
Iowa introduced driver education in its high schools less than 25 years ago. Eldora Tipton Shenandoah and Des Moines were among the first to adopt the program. Today over 95 percent of public high schools teach driver education to nearly 30 000 students and about 1 500 adults annually.
Akron High School presents a half time show titled Dr Ben Crazy with Dick Frerichs as the eminent physician and Susie Sypherd and Janene Woudenburg as his assistants. The High School Chorus performs the operetta Down in the Valley on October 22 at 8 00 p m. The cast includes Brack Weaver Jim Henriksen Jennie Parsons Carol Gant Thomas Bovehe Mike Earnest Leader and Preacher ey cane Natt Dyed bbe abs Bob Brown Jennie's Father Paul Johnson and Guard Murlin Henrich Peters 1 Mike McLane. Chorus officers elected Sept 19 are President Carol Gant Vice President Mike McLane Sec Treas Dick Frerichs. Two quartets vie for All State Chorus in Le Mars Iowa on Oct 26 with Quartets 1 Carol Gant Janet Gerrietts Jim Henriksen Bob Brown and Quartet 2 Kathy Kenny Connie Harvey Bob Nielsen Jerry Jans.
