Conservation Reserve payments in October and 1960 total
Farmers with land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve will receive their annual rental payments shortly after October 1. South Dakota Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee chairman Carl J. Schaefer notes payments are made in October as the growing season ends and to reduce violations. Participants must keep land out of production, prohibiting harvesting crops or grazing. Since the program began in 1956, October payments have been issued each year, with total 1960 rental payments in the state totaling $18,551,872.

No Conservation Reserve Sign Up This Fall
No new Conservation Reserve sign up this fall as the Soil Bank program ends in 1960. Plymouth County ASC chairman Wim Schinepf said existing contracts remain and payments continue for their term. In Plymouth there are 101 active contracts covering 10,156.6 acres with 1960 rentals around $120,598.39. Nationally over 300,000 contracts cover about 28.6 million acres with 1960 rentals near $338 million.

West Side Church of Christ moves to Akron site
A former Lutheran church building from Alcester South Dakota was moved to Akron Iowa after a two day eighteen mile journey. Ed Berghorst and crew from Hull Iowa conducted the move which required thirty six electric wire and thirty six telephone wire cuts. The structure rests on a new foundation in the southwest part of town and interior work is underway with worship to resume in a few weeks.
