Citizens recall the Freedom train’s Akron stop amid cheers and exhibits. Spectators viewed the Liberty Bell and historic artifacts during a 20 minute pause. Officials’ calls across multiple towns clarified arrival times after a radio misclocked schedule.
The Akron Register-Tribune lists subscription rates: six dollars annually, six months four dollars in Plymouth Sioux and Woodbury counties and Union County Iowa, seven dollars per year for elsewhere.
Local events include Embroidery Club and Christian Women Fellowship on Sept 18, plus meetings of Adaville UMC women Immanuel Lutheran Bible study and Akron Community School Board. The Friendship and Service club of Akron donates two books to the Akron Public Library. P. E. T. by Dr. Thomas Gordon offers guidance for parents and teachers on child cooperation. Fatu-Hiva by Thor Heyerdahl recounts a year on a primitive South Pacific island with his wife, illustrated by over 100 photographs.
Akron Community school enrollment shows a small decrease from 1974 to 1975 with total figures 640 in 1975 and 644 in 1974. Superintendent Chas Eskra notes Iowa schools face larger losses from lower birth rates and urban migration, while tuition pupil enrollment rises from 83 to 85.
Fayann Lucken and Dr. Charles D. Ridgley of El Paso Texas married August 23 at Plymouth Presbyterian Church rural Akron. The ceremony featured Dr. Howard Marty reading vows at 3 p.m. with red and white gladiolas, a bridal gown of organza lace, and a reception in the church parlors. The couple will live in El Paso after a wedding trip to San Francisco.
Grace Small attends baptism of great grandson Davi Michael Westergard in Le Mars and hosts dinner for Roscoe Small. W E M S Ladies of Akron First Baptist host Gold Star Mothers lunch. Clayton Small visits from Sibley. Bill Maynard from San Bernardino travels with Winnie Bliss family. Seniors meet for catered lunch with 65 attendees as Robert Brown provides entertainment. Various families travel to Black Hills Denver Cheyenne and Denver visits. Labor Day weekend guests include Waterbury family.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Welch announce the birth of their first child, a son, on Monday September 15, 1975 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City. The mother is LaNae Klemme Welch.
Plymouth county residents aged 60 and older are invited to a picnic on Tuesday September 23 at Le Mars municipal park shelter house. The council on aging sponsors with noon start. Bring own food and table service. Coffee and tea provided. If rain, reschedule to Wednesday September 24 at the same time and place. Details on KLIEM radio Le Mars.
Akron alumnae and parents are invited to two Homecoming dances after the 1975 football game. The Student Council hosts a Commons dance, while the Alumnae Association and Boosters Club sponsor a second, 9:30 to 12:30 event in the Elementary school’s Multi-Purpose room with music by the Sonic Three from Le Mars. Admission is 3 dollars per couple or 2 dollars per person.

Book and Thimble study club held its first 1975 76 meeting at Penny Bryant’s home on September 9 with a roll call guessing Childhood Whodunits. The group read by laws, reviewed rules, and presented yearbooks. A salute marked Helen Shoulberg’s 90th birthday, noting her as a charter member and former county chair.
The Northwest Regional Library system board of trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday September 25 1975 at 2 00 p m in the Spirit Lake public library Spirit Lake Iowa. The regional system covers nineteen northwestern Iowa counties and rotates meeting sites to involve librarians and local boards with the public welcome.
Mary Hill daughter of Mr and Mrs Oral Hill of Akron arrived Friday evening after completing basic training with the U S Army at Fort McClellan Alabama. She has enlisted in the three year program and will depart September 26 for Fort Sam Houston Texas for clinical specialist training. Mary is a 1975 Akron Community High School graduate and Akron's first Gay 90 Day queen.
The Order of Rainbow for girls meets Wednesday at seven for initiation. Akron assembly invites members to attend and participate in the planned initiation ceremony and activities.
Akron residents enjoyed films Ponies and Stockholm Old and New highlighting Sweden’s islands churches hotels and opera houses. A long list of visitors including Mr and Mrs Lloyd Eibhacker and many others called on residents. Immanuel Lutheran hosted a program with piano and singing. Freedom Train viewing drew crowds. Open house celebrated Lizzie Tindall’s 90th birthday. numerous visits from relatives marked the week at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Akron.
