Relatives and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ross in Elk Point to celebrate his 88th birthday Tuesday August 30. Attendees included Virgil and Lorne Ross Harold and Janet Johnson and Earl Jans from Akron as well as Wilbur Nelson from Sioux City Chestina Barnett and others. A surprise call from his son Claude in Oregon capped the evening along with cards gifts cake and ice cream.

Mr and Mrs Rick Lorensen of Restville Maryland visited relatives in Akron with his parents Mr and Mrs Orville Lorensen and Mr and Mrs George Hitzemann. They also visited Cedar Rapids Iowa and Peoria Illinois and Mrs Besse Lias returned from Jackson Tennessee Atlanta Georgia and Washington DC. Mr and Mrs Clark Gassman Jill and Kara returned home to Woodlands California after visiting Oma Gassman and other relatives.
The Sioux Valley extension club met September 2 at Margaret Stoutenberg's home. Hostesses and project leaders were chosen for the year. The club voted to invite Mr Ross Mussen, Union County sheriff, to speak on Crime Prevention at the October meeting. Edith Baker served as secretary.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Petty of Elk Point South Dakota celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday September 18 from 2 to 4 pm in the Senior Citizen hall of the new Legion hall Elk Point. Their children Mike Gale Dan DeBuhr Dawn and Doug Petty host along with four grandsons. Ernest and Doris Lundgren married September 20 1952 at Elk Point South Dakota.
A long list of Akron and nearby residents visited friends and relatives at a local nursing home, with many stops across Akron Westfield Le Mars Sioux City Fairmont Detroit and other communities. The gatherings included calls on residents and shared greetings at multiple homes during the week.
Akron girls drill team unveiled red knit jumpers white cowl neck sweaters white boots with red tassels in their season opening performance at the Akron nursing home. The 16 members led by sponsor Mr. Don Mortensen performed routines at pep rallies and home games with plans to add white gloves for basketball season.
Mr and Mrs Virgil Gabel of Akron were feted at a Waeside Le Mars dinner marking their 25th wedding anniversary. Attending were numerous Akron, Craig and Le Mars residents including Dale Huettmann Orville Sorensen Harry Willer Cecil Horton Bill Miller Don Neunaber Robert Hillrichs Vernie Olson Freeman Howard Donald Boetger and Rick Gabel. A thankful note from the couple ends the report.
Seaman Patrick Melton of the U S Navy and his wife Gloria and son Timothy left Akron for their new home in Norfolk Virginia on August 22 Mrs Melton and Timothy had been living with her parents Mr and Mrs James Withoven in Akron for six months while Patrick completed a six month European tour aboard the U S S John F Kennedy. Seaman Melton is stationed at the Norfolk naval base.
Mike Vrana, son of Harold and Mrs. Vrana of Westfield, is showcased at Akron Public Library during September. A Westfield High graduate and Westmar College junior majoring in art education, he works in acrylics and sculpture with multiple works on display including an oil painting. The library invites all to view the exhibit. senior citizens meet at 1:30 pm on Monday September 19.
