Conserving Soil and Water on Slopes
C K Dahlgren of the Soil Conservation Service outlines key practices for soil and water conservation on sloped land. Grass waterways prevent runoff from terraces and contour farming, with well sodded waterways needed for extreme conditions. Plan ahead for fall seeding, shape crooked waterways if eroded, and use farm equipment where possible. An engineering survey by SCS helps determine needs, with cost share via the Tri-Cultural Conservation Program.
