Special Correspondence from Westfield reports church meeting for Congregational Ladies Aid on Sept. 1, library hours on Tuesdays and Fridays, and a rising school enrollment. PTA officers listed include Norman Lins and Margaret Phipps. First PTA meeting set for Sept. 12 with annual family reception and lunch. Also notes about Fall Deanery meeting and a large Dirks reunion with attendees from multiple towns.
Famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin was rebuilt and reopened on July 18 marking 15 years since the fire that destroyed the old building. An early production of The Playboy of the Western World featured Sara Allgood Barry Fitzgerald Arthur Shelds Maureen O'Hara Siobain MacKenna among other notable artists in attendance and ongoing promotional efforts by the Tourist Board highlighting the modern Abbey complex.
The annual Pollock Reunion held on Sunday August 21 at the Root home shifted its date from the third Sunday in August to the fourth Sunday in June for convenience. Officers elected include President Mrs Harmon Boyd Vice President Herb Woudenberg and Secretary-Treasurer King Nason Lemme. Attendees listed from multiple Root families along with others from Boone Ann Arbor Vermillion Sioux Falls Akron and Sioux City. The reunion has met continuously since 1913.
The Mid-Sioux Opportunity Board in Remsen approved a Conduct and Administration plan for the Remsen office for the coming year, a Neighborhood Youth Corps program employing about 126 youth, a Neighborhood Service Center for Plymouth County and similar efforts planned for Cherokee Woodbury and Ida Counties. The four-county survey progress was reported and Robert G. Haley was elected acting director.
A hometown push urges residents to buy from area merchants to boost the local economy. Campaign emphasizes supporting small businesses and keeping money circulating within Akron's business community.
The University of Iowa was awarded 31688 dollars by the Iowa Tuberculosis and Health Association to fund five medical research projects. Funds from Christmas Seal and memorial gifts support lung diseases including emphysema bronchitis asthma and pneumonia. The association also sent 15570 dollars to the National Tuberculosis Association this year. Since 1959 grants total 344924.86 dollars for medical research and fellowships in Iowa.
The U S Army Recruiting Main Station Des Moines says applications are open for the Warrant Officer Flight Training Program. Eligible men aged 18 to 30 must be high school graduates, between 5'4" and 6'4", weigh under 200 pounds, and meet strict mental and physical standards. Rotary wing training lasts 33 weeks, fixed wing 34 weeks. Qualified pilots receive about $100 monthly above base pay plus quarters and subsistence. Mr and Mrs Levi Pennington formerly of Solon now in Mechanicsville were sent anniversary greetings by President and Mrs Johnson for their 64th wedding anniversary dated August 1. The Penningtons have nine children 39 grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Lt. (j.g.) James Draw Jr son of Mr and Mrs James Drew of Waukon is back in the U S after completing 140 missions over Wist Nem. He has earned 12 decorations including 10 silver medals and is assigned to Miramar Naval Air Station San Diego to instruct new aviation students.
Nearly 1,200 Iowa veterans are in summer school under the GI Bill, a number expected to rise as fall enrollments finish. VA officials note training reaches beyond colleges to vocational programs and Iowa schools being established statewide. Eligible veterans must have been discharged after January 31, 1955 with 181 or more active duty days and should apply at the Des Moines VA Center.
A golden spike driven at Ogden Utah in 1800 symbolized the first transcontinental railway link. A 9 pound 6 ounce tomato grown by Earl Weinheimer in Fontanelle weighed in at 19 inches in circumference and was described as a true tomato.
