Plymouth county ranked third high contributor in the northwest division with 2794.47 in the 1966 campaign. Woodbury and Buena Vista exceeded this total. The Iowa Heart Association reports a record 442,960.30 raised for fiscal 1955 66, funding heart research education and services.

Quail population shows increase in fall counts

Elden Stempel of the State Conservation Commission reports a 20 percent rise in quail numbers over last year with most observed as adult brood stock. Final October counts will define the statewide total as mild winters aided range expansion and good spring hatching conditions boosted populations.

Local Coast Guard recruit finishes eight weeks training

Seaman Apprentice Ronald D. Popken, USCG, son of Mr and Mrs Pred H. Popken of Rural Route Akron, completed eight weeks of recruit training in Gape May New Jersey. He learned boatmanship signaling infantry drill personal hygiene Coast Guard history and traditions military courtesy and citizenship in preparation for a Coast Guard career.
