Farm fire, dairy addition, and family milestones in 1920s town

Fire destroyed a machine shed and granary on the Gerhart Johnson farm five miles northeast of town. E F Cobb shipped 21 Holstein cows from St Paul for a new dairy herd west of town. A H S beat Elk Point High 25 7 for their 1923 season opener. John F Steen married Esther McCorkell in St Patrick’s church October 24 1928 and began homemaking south of town. Heavy frosts and ice occurred October 18 19. Melvin Holm died October 19 1928 at Akron Hospital. survived by wife Mary three sons one daughter mother and five brothers. Pearl Wynna died October 19 1928 of diphtheria. funeral at Riverside cemetery. Richmond became Milwaukee Road section foreman at Ethan South Dakota.

G A R and W R S campfire supper announced

The annual G A R and W R S campfire and supper was slated for the evening of Nov 3 with a program. Improvements were under way at Akron Mill by Manager Geo Strom and Mr Corey. Dr C G Ellsworth arrived to begin practicing medicine after leaving Diamondville Wyoming. A drunken brawl at a local saloon led to the arrest of three out-of-towners, each fined $25.

Autumn school notes preview season events at AHS

The staff lists editors and reporters and announces upcoming activities at AHS. F.F.A. Hayride, Q1 end, Elk Point football game, ACT testing, parent teacher conferences, and a talent show are scheduled. The operetta Down In The Valley impressed, vocal instructor Miss Borchers praised, and students are urged to join the talent show with contact persons Orris, Sypherd, or Elwood.

In SOCIAL STUDIES, students study launching of our government and conditions of the era and prepare scrapbooks on racial problems. Modern Problems classes examine the legislative department in relation to the Constitution and the judicial and executive branches.

Concert Band Practices and Parade Honors Highlight Brookings

The concert band began practicing on Monday October 28 and played at Brookings on Saturday October 19 for the Hobo Day Parade. They delivered a fine performance despite fatigue from the long parade route, earning many compliments.

AHS Student Council Sponsor Amateur Talent Show

At a October 21 meeting Mike Orris proposed an amateur talent show with the council agreeing to assist. proceeds benefit Nancy Weinblom. Local judges will award a prize, entry by fee or free will offering, no date set yet. contact Orris Sypherd or Elwood. Speech class read poetry and prose and will give fear and self review speeches. in nine weeks they conduct 7-10 minute informative talks. During Homecoming, 7th and 8th grade Art classes created posters and decorations for the event with India ink drawings and construction paper designs.

Akron High School Operetta Own in the Valley

On October 22 Akron students directed by Miss Pat Borchers staged Own In The Valley. Jim Henriksen led as Brack Weaver with Carol Gant as Jennie Parsons, while Bob Brown narrated and preached. Brack kills Thomas Boucher after a failed courtship and dies after jail escape, ending with Jennie at his side.

World History class covers Napoleonic era and more

World History students study the French Revolution the German and Italian states and Russia from the sixteenth to seventeenth centuries and the roles they played in the Napoleonic Wars. They now hold a weekly current events day to boost newspaper reading.

Plymouth County Sets 1968 Corn Support at 1.17 Per Bushel

Cecil J. Kennedy, Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee, announced that the final 1968 crop corn support in Plymouth County remains 1.17 per bushel, the season minimum. The notice notes the national average support of 1.25, 79 percent of parity, with no change from prior flags and outlines cooperators’ eligibility for 0.99 per bushel loans plus an 18 cent per bushel payment on normal production. It cites a three year reduction in the national corn carry-over to about 1.3 billion bushels, down from a 1961 peak of 2 billion.
