FFA Meeting Reports From October Session at Ag Room

The F F A held a Monday meeting in the school Ag room with twenty members and seven teen greenhands. Reports from officers covered a Kansas City trip for the National FFA Convention and project discussions. Box tops yield 50 cents per box to the FFA, grapefruit and oranges at four dollars a box with thirty five cent commission, hayride planned for October 31, and dues set at one dollar fifty with October 25 deadline.

Greenhand Initiation for Freshmen and Ag II Contest Plans

After a meeting the Freshmen undertook formal then informal Greenhand initiation with 18 invitees including David Allen Wayne Brown Dennis Dirks and others. Pranks featured green grapes with unsweetened chocolate and a Kool-Aid lemon vinegar mix while pencils molasses flour eggs and other antics were used. AG II class members Bob Wych Alan Hemmingsen Clark Van Donge Winston Huebner and Arthur Finzen form a land judging team for the North West Iowa contest. Ag III covers feeds and care as students study plans for shop projects and livestock programs.

Ninth through twelfth graders study parts of speech and reports

Freshmen review parts of speech and learn verbals while delivering 3 to 5 minute oral non fiction book reports. Sophomores focus on verbals in grammar. Tenth graders give 8 to 6 minute fiction book reports. Eleventh graders study predicate words and concise writing while using the library. Seniors read Chaucer and Shakespeare and write themes.

Akron youth earns top rated 4-H record book title

Rick Anderson of the Portland Preston Pillars won the 1963 county 4-H record book honor in Flymouth County. The judging by Mrs. Dale Zimmerman rated 225 books with purple blue red or white standings and Anderson’s entry scored 99 of 100. He starred in baby beef calves jr feeder cattle and hog projects and served as club officer and livestock judge at county and state demonstrations. Other purple ribbon books included Allan Hemmingsen Joann Fulton Connie Krause Cherry Jauer Dotty Treinen Linda Bottjen Karen Bottjen Kristann Schneider Tom Heuertz and Wayne Beitelsbacher.

County 4-H Soil Judging Contest Winners Revealed

Four Plymouth county 4-H members and FFA teams from LeMars Akron and Kingsley competed October 5 at Wayne Weber farm in America Township. Clark Van Donge won first with 242 out of 800, Alan Hemmingsen took second with 219, Ted Schnepf and Larry Klemme tied for third at 217. Other participants included Bruce Knapp Ronnie Klemme and Stanley Javer. Training by Lavern Feusner preceded the contest with Soil Conservation Service staff Merle Sawyer Bob Minor and Ronald Rowland assisting.
