Iowa Pilot Centers Boost School Fitness Program
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness ran four Iowa school systems in July 1963 as pilot centers to model and promote fitness in schools. Centers included Des Moines Independent, George Community, Ruthven Community, and West Sioux Community districts with criteria such as health appraisals, screening tests, minimum 15 minutes vigorous activity, and fitness testing across terms. The 3-item screening showed girls outperforming boys in Sept 1963, and May 1964 results rose for both genders. Achievement tests tracked seven fitness items, with improvement from Sept 1963 to May 1964, especially in boys and girls reaching satisfactory or excellent levels.
