Frank Nye Cedar Rapids Iowa Red Cross fund chairman says response to flood relief appeals has been gratifying but more help is needed soon. He notes floods since early last month fed and sheltered victims and that as Mississippi floods recede the Red Cross will continue aid for one to six months. Iowa remains well below its 1.2 million 1965 quota and urges contributions sent to local Red Cross chapters nationwide.
Des Moines May 17 1965 Iowa Republicans push a fair plan while Democrats push a secret 61 member Senate for 1967, potentially limiting voters choice as three Republicans face no re election under the favored plan. The Governor addresses labor bills and a public defender proposal stalls then passes amid parliamentary strains.
This week’s Senior interview features Barbara Ann Muth born June 3 1947 in Hawarden and Teresa Jeanne Orris born July 22 1947 in Norfolk Nebraska known as Nella. Barbara attends St Patrick’s Catholic Church and participates in Raider Review Norka Staff FHA and Pep club with plans to attend Stewart’s Hall School after graduation. Teresa a West Side Church of Christ member teaches Sunday School and engages in All State chorus band glee drill team Norka staff FHA and more. she plans to marry in July after graduation.
The senior honors group chose Karen Wise and Scott Baker as commencement speakers. Karen plans to study at State College of Iowa with a focus on teaching, while Scott will study engineering at Iowa State Ames. Their speech titles were not determined yet.
Editor notes congratulate track team for a strong year and applaud Bob Wych named local American Legion representative to Boy State. Also salutes Alan Hemmingsen elected Student Body President for 1965 66 at Akron High School.
Plymouth Countys 101 service establishments reported total receipts of 1.6 million dollars in 1963, up 14 percent from 1958. The census covers personal services, miscellaneous business services, auto and other repairs, motion picture firms, theatres, amusements, hotels, and motels, employing 123 persons excluding owners.
