Westfield High School will hold commencement Friday evening May 21 at 8 o'clock in Community Hall with Professor G O Thompson of Western Union College LeMars as speaker. The Class of 1937 includes Fay L Boyd Allen C Moffatt Catherine J Martin Mary Ellen Faust and Bernard L Bertrand. The baccalaureate exercises were held in Community Hall with Rev Fr Charles Ernst delivering the address and the program featured music and awards for art work by local students.
The State Fair board released a 228 page premium list revealing total cash prizes of 107504 for farmers and 4 H youth among others. Prizes exceed 1936 by over 3000 with largest gains in horses and 4 H. New classes appear in sheep cattle flowers and apiary. Dates set Aug 27 to Sep 3 in Des Moines with expected record entries and attendance.
A lawn care note suggests using plain kerosene sprayed on lawns to eradicate dandelions. A good grade of straight run kerosene purchased at a filling station or grocery may yield surprisingly effective results, according to W. E. Loomis, plant expert.
A physiologist at Iowa State College explains spraying methods for eradicating scattered dandelions and heavy infestations. For small plants use a knapsack or garden sprayer. large areas may use broadcast spray. Fall spraying, especially in September, is favored to minimize root survival, but late fall can harm bluegrass. Kerosene sprays retard bluegrass growth, turning grass yellow but not killing it unless distillate is used. For dandelions, spray any time in summer when weather is cool or cloudy to reach roots. Fall broadcast recommends two quarts per 100 square feet or 200 gallons per acre.
Tha M Ladiges demonstrated pattern and fabric selection to Home Demonstration clubs in Union county at Alcester on May 12 and 13. Topics covered included line color and design matched to physical color and personality types, with copies of dress patterns and a 4 H clothing kit distributed. Plans were made for a 4 H Lion meeting on May 19 as groups across Union organize clubs and start projects amid rising meat consumption in the United States.
