Pioneer educator Ross earns PTA recognition in Sioux City
Akorn Register-Tribune reports Thomas A. Ross, longtime Plymouth County farmer and school advocate, received a special honor at the May 4 meeting of the District 4 Towns Congress of Parents and Teachers in Riverside high school, Sioux City. The Drake University Law School graduate, 1960s era board member, and former Hancock township treasurer shared memories of teaching Magdalen Kundert, his Swiss-born wife who taught 33 years. He urged debt-free district planning and mill-rate prudence, noting his drive to Sioux City for the event and his limited night driving. The Rural Home Culture Club held its annual guest day with Miss Opal Robertson and Miss Melba Garvin welcomed as new members, and guest speaker Mrs. Michael Strom presented the program Home with chalk illustrations.

A soil temperature station was installed at the Western Town Experimental Farm near Castana Iowa on April 26. Daily 12 noon readings at 4 inch depth will be sent to news media by the Sioux City Weather Bureau from May through spring planting. Kyle Peterson notes soil temperature guides planting of corn and soybeans with germination ranges from 64 to 70 degrees for corn and 64 to 68 for soybeans. Dale Wienger will compile yearly soil temperatures at multiple depths to relate growth, maturity, and yield and assess freeze effects on germination of newly seeded crops.
