Forty years ago at Akron school election 438 votes were cast. heavy turnout centered on retention of the incumbent school superintendent. Chas M. Allen and Dr G H Waddon were re elected directors for three-year terms by comfortable margins. Obituaries record Mrs Edward Thorp, 57, dies March 14 after cancer. Services at First Christian church. burial at Riverside.
Speech and hearing testing in Plymouth public schools reports 1,667 children screened with 80 having significant issues and 63 with borderline deficits. A third grade hearing test followed by speech evaluations found 211 total speech problems, ranging from mild articulation to more severe cases, with several children recommended for medical follow up.
A Plymouth County report notes many children with speech problems enroll in therapy, with 130 to 185 students involved during the school year. Delays in articulation often require individual scheduling, and dropout rates occur when differences between peers are substantial. Home support is a key factor in progress.
The Iowa Highway Commission will issue weekly detour and embargo maps starting March 19, with the first 1967 edition mailed from Ames on Wednesdays and effective Sundays. Maps show routes under construction, open sections with cautions, and embargoed or restricted major highways, including night restrictions.
The Akron Iowa town council held a regular session March 7 1967 chaired by Mayor Vinton G Adams. Present were councilmen Tucker Eetips Hummel Kilstrom Absent Trouhe and others. A motion to assume responsibility for public skating rink during the season was approved with voting detail recorded. Bills were approved totaling 8 764.05 with payments to local businesses and utilities. Mayor Adams adjourned the meeting after approving the bills.
