Westfield Community News Highlights From Sutherland to Sioux City

Westfield residents host visitors and attend events from Sutherland to Sioux City. Mr and Mrs George Bern visit family, Jim Buryanek hosts dinner, guild ladies sew bandages, and many call on relatives. An athletic banquet at the Biltmore attracted about 90 with Al Buckingham as guest speaker. A library crafts display showcases county club handiwork.

Johnson Jr Homemakers March Meeting Report

The Johnson Jr Homemakers met March 19 at Linda and Jean Miller’s home with 22 members two leaders and two visitors present. Reports were given and approved. Plans discussed include a swimming party a Better Grooming contest and 4 H member signs. Demonstrations covered winter clothing grooming hair and nails with a manicure session led by Mrs Willer and girls practicing on each other.

Iowa Crop Donates Potato Eyes to Korea

Part of the 1962 Iowa CROP, the program shipped 760000 potato eyes valued at 5000 from Earl May Seed Company Shenandoah Iowa in January packed in 300 drums. Over 68000 lbs of potatoes were used to supply the eyes, with an anticipated harvest of nearly a million pounds. The Earl May Company donated over 200 to cover extra freight due to a dock strike in New Orleans. Nearly 10000 volunteers in 20 states conducted 700 county campaigns, boosting 1962 donations to 1401887, the highest since 1949.
