JC P E O chapter marks 30th anniversary in Akron

Members of the JC P E O observed the 30th anniversary Tuesday March 16 at Wesley United Methodist church dining room Akron. Dinner by Central Catering Hawarden followed by a short meeting at Gwen Jurgens home. Correction issued for prior officer election report and Marie Strom named alternate delegate. Sue Higman spoke on events from 1776 in Bicentennial observance. Next meeting set for April 6 at Eva Brown’s home with Pauline Carrington as co host.

Advisory council formed to assess community needs

A meeting to form an advisory council for the alcoholism counseling information and referral center was held March 23 at Floyd Valley hospital assembly room in Le Mars. The advisory council will assess the community's needs related to alcohol and drug abuse.

West-Port Farm Bureau meeting and community notices

West-Port Farm Bureau ladies met on March 17 at Marlene Pridie’s home with nine attendees naming their top income commodities. Pridie led a lesson on commodities and lunch featured farm product dishes. President Penny Harvey urged members to participate in Farm Bureau Women’s Day on April 5 bringing an antique item and wearing Bicentennial attire. An appreciation noted for Donna Lucken’s February Valentine’s dinner for 12 couples. The next meeting is April 21 with a Century Living program.

Shirley Appley Named to UNI Fall Dean's List

Shirley Appley of Akron is on the University of Northern Iowa fall dean's list after earning a 3.5 plus GPA in at least 12 graded hours. About 815 students, roughly 10 percent of undergraduates, achieved scholastic honors. In a separate note, Walter White of rural Postville celebrated a dairy cow birth of triplets, a rare event occurring about once in 80,000 births.

Birthday honors for Mrs Anna Klemme at 85

Thirty-one relatives neighbors and friends visited Mrs Anna Klemme on Tuesday bringing flowers cards and gifts for her 85th birthday anniversary. A cake baked by her daughter and decorated by Mrs Leonard Dirks in red white and blue was displayed as a centerpiece. Mrs Klemme has two daughters Mrs William Utesch Akron and Mrs William Toel Le Mars plus five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Karl Oehlerking of Akron are the parents of a son Ray Howard born Tuesday March 16 at Akron hospital.

Helen Horton born November 23, 1896 in Lawton Iowa. married Walter Horton in Sioux City 1918. They raised five boys and one girl, farmed near Akron, retired 1947, she entered nursing home 1971. Rural Home Culture Club Elect Officers

The Rural Home Culture club met on Monday March 1 at Edna Hasenbank's home with 11 members and one guest. They delivered 22 Valentine plates to shut-ins and a box to an Akron nursing home. New officers: Miriam Hemmingsen president Esther Neunaber vice president Lois Klemme secretary Ramona Weenink treasurer. Ramona Weenink to be delegate to county Federated convention in Le Mars on March 29 at 10 am. Next meeting April 2 at Sioux City museum at 2 pm with lunch at 3 pm at Green Gables. Pat Dennison spoke on the history of Iowa from This Is The Peace.
